The coaches make the players who they are.

While that is certainly true, the reverse is equally true. Great players, as well as a number of factors that loosely fall under the category of "luck" -- seasons relatively free of major injuries, weak schedules, and that mystical phenomenon known as team chemistry or synergy -- make otherwise good coaches look great too.

Definitely. But the fact of the matter is the coaching staff we had in the mid-90's is an example of something that can never ever be emulated. That's as all-star as it gets.

When was the last time the Super Bowl champion had the #1 offense, #1 defense, and #1 special teams in the NFL?

1996. The Green Bay Packers.

Coaching isn't a matter of luck. It's a matter of knowing what you have and "moving forward" from there. That's what McCarthy has been trying to do for these three years.

You're right. But those factors I labeled "luck" can and do affect outcomes. No coach with sub-par assets can work miracles. For example, to use an exaggerated example, even if a coach as great as Lombardi himself were forced to field a team of high schoolers against any team in the NFL (even the Lions), no amount of inspiration or good coaching could overcome the talent deficit.

Am I saying things like injuries matter? Yeah. Absolutely.

This is a serious question, Why would Peppers want to came to Green Bay? He will probably get offers from many teams, some who made the play-offs this year.
The other thing is what makes anyone think Ted Thompson is going to offer any FA with Peppers talent enough money to make him come here?

He hasn't done it in the past, why should he do it now?

Please prove me wrong Ted.

Ted Thompson is going to listen to his coaches and hear what attributes players need to work in the systems implemented.

There will be players in this upcoming draft that have played in various schemes that really did not allow them to utilize their strenghs but who may physically have all the tools to be great in what WE will be doing.

Ted's job is to match the job description his coaches lay out and then find the players and this is much more difficult than just looking at who everybody is saying are great players.

As far as Peppers the same goes. He may feel he could be great in a 3-4 but on the other hand he will be getting paid mega-bucks with no track record as it relates to what WE will be doing. There's certainly enough film and knowledge of this guy for Capers to look at him and tell if he would be a fit.

My point is it's not all about what Ted Thompson decides. He's getting imput from his coaches so while those that don't like him want to throw him under the bus for every FA he doesn't sign I hate to say this but you don't know SQUAT compared to the coaches giving Ted their take on various players.

Our FRINGE understanding of all that goes into decision making at that level doesn't make Ted Thompson an idiot when he passes on players whether it be the draft or FA.

+1 for this point specifically. God forbid you actually point it out, but it's pretty amusing how we fans seem to think we know more about football than the people who've dedicated their lives to it and who actually collect paychecks for it.

Then again, it's the internet, where everyone can be a genius. <shrugs>

ILike - Just because people get paid to do something doesn't mean they're always right. I don't know why I have to keep saying this over and over and over again.

Quick example, which is really sad. A woman my wife used to work with felt lumps in her breasts. The doctor checked them out and said they were nothing. For a second time a few months, she went back and asked them to check them again. Turns out they were cancerous and she lost both breasts. Well, after losing both of them, the cancer had spread. Now she's dead.

But no, she was just a stupid person who didn't get paid to do that so of course she didn't know what she was talking about. The doctor is always right, because he not only gets paid to do it, he spent 8 years prior to getting paid studying. I doubt anyone on any team's management staff spent 8 years in college studying football before getting an NFL job.

So, the layman is always wrong. We're just all stupid people who don't get paid to do this. The people who get paid are always right. Always.

Zombie,

Ineptitude exists in every avenue of employment...particularly government, if I do say so myself....but you make a point based on the assumed ineptitude of the professional (Packers' coaches/scouts) and the assumed savant nature of a bunch of idiots (us fans) to make your point...which is in and of itself unfair.

I think it is safe to say that, barring complete ineptitude, pro coaches/scouts know a WHOLE lot more about that business than us.
