2 Million to a coordinator? That is hefty in these times.. dispels a little of the Ted is too cheap theory.. spend it when you have to spend it.

BTW.. I like the Packers urgency in this read.. worked it and got it done.

About time we see it. A sign of things to come?

GIANTS HESITATION CAUSED THEM TO LOSE CAPERS
Posted by Mike Florio on January 19, 2009, 12:15 p.m.

As Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reported on Sunday night, former Pats assistant coach and two-time expansion team head coach Dom Capers has decided to join the Packers as their new defensive coordinator.

Chris Mortensen of ESPN reports that the Giants, and possibly several other teams, were chasing Capers. Because the Giants hesitated to meet Capers salary demands, he opted to jump to the Packers instead.

Per Mort, Capers is still owed $2.6 million from the Fins for 2009. Hell receive a discounted salary in his first season with the Packers, since any money he receives there will only reduce the $2.6 million owed to him by Miami.

Next year, Capers will make more than $2 million.

Mortensen reports that the Giants will now consider internal candidates to replace former defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, the new head coach of the Rams. But its still possible that outside candidates will be replaced.

Capers also might have drawn interest from the Ravens, Cowboys, Jets, and possibly the Chiefs.

Very interesting. Regarding some of the other parts of that article: I'm surprised that he didn't at least interview with those other teams. He just jumped right on board here.

I'm too lazy to do the research, but I doubt said coach had the impressive credentials Capers brings to the table.

He was pretty well thought of, being an Andy Reid disciple. I remember some of the Packer faithful just knew he was going to be really good and were very upset that we didn't even get to interview him.

He didn't have Capers' history of success, though. I'll give you that.

but he had no history as a head coach. that's a gamble. capers has a solid history. there's no guessing whether or not he can be successful as a DC. whereas with childress (and mccarthy), it was a gamble as to whether they could make the transition from coordinator to head coach.

I read that piece totally different than you 93z.

The piece suggests Capers is owed 2.6 million in 09 because of the Fins firing him early from his contract. Regardless of Capers being our DC, he would still be making more than 2 million considering what the Dolphins owe him.

The piece also suggests that the Packers will not pay a huge amount to Capers next year, because he still has money owed to him by the Dolphins. The Packers may have gotten him for around $500,000 next year for all we know.

I wouldn't be surprised though if the contract went up considerably, say around the triple of $500,000, in 2010 and beyond.

Next year as in 2010..

While the Packers are getting an undisclosed discounted salary for this year, a source said the team will pay Capers in excess of $2 million for 2010.
