Capers stats

In 1994 Capers was named the Pro Football Weekly/PFWA Assistant Coach of the Year as the Steelers led the NFL in rush defense.

He also earned Pro Football Weekly/PFWA Assistant Coach of the Year honors as the Jaguars' defensive coordinator in 1999, as Jacksonville led the NFL in scoring defense (13.9 points per game).

lol, hey I'm a product of the MTV generation: all flash no substance; I judge a book by it's cover damn it!

Seriously though, 13.9 ppg on the defensive side of the ball is friggin crazy. Not Kyle Turley threatening to kill Martz crazy, the good kind of crazy.

And he has a record of coordinating defences that are solid against the run. Dare I say it, maybe just maybe Capers can find a use for Harrell? :spiderman:

what i love most is the success he has had in environments that weren't exactly conducive to success. He took the Panthers to the NFC championship in their second year... that to me still gets majorly overlooked. He had a chance to play in the Super Bowl if the Packers weren't so damn good.

I just like anyone who doesn't just accept challenges but searches for them.

Im still on the McDermott bandwagon, as an agressive defensive scheme coupled with a young coach would fit best here in my opinion. But if Capers lands here... i feel like we will be in very safe hands.

What about continuity though Packnic?

McDermott is young, and if he excels at DC he may well be on his way to getting a HC job.

While Capers is an older coach, teams might prefer someone who is an up and comer as opposed to an "old timer" meaning Capers might offer better continuity than McDermott.

I don't think at this point continuity can be underestimated. Mike McCarthy surely doesn't want to hire a DC, only to see himself in the same boat a couple of years down the line.

Mike McCarthy wants to keep the press coverage scheme as base.. some of the conflict with one of the candidates was they wanted the freedom to be able to run whichever coverage scheme they felt was best in their opinion.. he wouldn't elaborate or couldn't on which candidate it was...

Always love the rumors people hear.. factual or not. ;)

"pack93z" wrote:

I sure hope it's not factual - if McCarthy doesn't have the sense to leave the defense entirely up to whomever he ends up hiring as DC (or, if he hires someone so green that he can't afford to leave it all up to them), it's going to get worse before it gets better.

Honestly, any DC that would come into the Packers and not use the obvious strength of the CB would be a lousy hire.

Just adding some more 'proffesional' opinions and info

As they have attempted to fill their defensive coordinator job, the Packers have brought in Mike Nolan and Gregg Williams.

Nolan took the Broncos defensive coordinator job, and Williams went to the Saints.

Now, the Packers have Patriots assistant coach Dom Capers visiting and interviewing for the job.

Which means Capers likely will land a job elsewhere.

If the Packers could hire him, Capers would be a superb addition. He has respect around the league, experience in the game and will be coaching somewhere soon. But Green Bay has struggled to close defensive coordinator deals this offseason.

Now it has another chance.

Ok, it doesn't add a whole lot, but I just like Schefted.

This guy seems to be ok, especially looking at this thread. Hope we can actually land him this time... I see him going to the Browns or so.

I'd like to see this more so than Jim Hasslett.

Again this is an upgrade, but you have to wonder whether or not Mike McCarthy is hell bent on landing Sean McDermott. The Packers are stubborn. They've got stubborn people running the team and coaching the team and if McCarthy wants that interview, he'll wait it out much to the fans disgust. Personally I wouldn't mind Don Capers, but a guy like Capers needs full control of the defense. McCarthy can't pull a Mike Sherman and become a control freak.
