"Jan 12 DE Julius Peppers is an unrestricted free agent, but there is a chance the Panthers will put the franchise tag on him and then try to trade him. When asked twice in a span of 12 hours whether or not he wants to be back in Carolina next season, the soon-to-be unrestricted free agent wouldn't say that was the case. "Ideally I want to be in the best situation possible for myself and this organization," he said. "I'm thankful for everything they've done for me and I don't want to leave them crippled or in a bad situation and I don't want to do that to myself either. So whatever works our best for both sides is what I'm comfortable with." So has the four-time Pro Bowl defensive end played his final down for the hometown Panthers? It's beginning to look that way. Peppers' comments on Sunday as he left Bank of America Stadium for perhaps the final time left everyone wondering if his agent Carl Carey isn't trying to work out the NFL version of a sign-and-trade deal with the Panthers similar to what happened with Jared Allen and Kansas City last year. That'd basically mean the Panthers would put the franchise tag on Peppers and then allow him and his agent to broker a trade with another team. While the Panthers would lose Peppers, leaving them with a huge hole at defensive end, they'd at least get some draft picks ??? presumably high and presumably more than one ??? in return as compensation."

I always figured since he was from Carolina anyway he would always stay there but it seems like he is entertaining other options. That said there is probably no chance we get him with a "Jared Allen Style" trade. 🙂

Good. In "sign and trade" deals, the team acquiring the player gets screwed. Unless the player signs a deal significantly below market value, anything you give up in the "trade" portion of the transaction is, by definition, overpaying. Now, you could argue that what you trade for the player is simply the cost of access to an asset, which is technically true from an economic standpoint, but simple access to a player should never be valued at the rates you see (1st round pick for Jared Allen).

In fact, this premium on access is such a deterrent to acquiring a player that it's actually the basis of the Franchise Tag. Any Franchise player may be signed by any team at any deal he chooses to accept, but the cost of that player is an additional two 1st round picks to the players former team.

Effectively, if the Franchise Tag is slapped on Peppers, you might as well rule out him being a Packer, as even if he is shopped in a sign and trade, Ted Thompson isn't dumb enough to get involved.

Yeah we're not the Vikings that trade away valuable draft picks.
