Taylor Mays is a guy Ted Thompson should investigate at #9 if he is not satisfied with our current safety spot across from Collins. Due is a BEAST!

Mays is going back to USC for another season.. but that kid is a beast no doubt. 3 year starter in "that" program.. speaks volumes.

Both are young. Both have upsides.

Remember just last year, a lot of us (myself included) were anti-Collins. Then Collins led the NFL in INTs returned for TDs and is in the Pro Bowl.

I think both Atari and Rouse had bad years but I have faith they'll both bounce back. I like the way Rouse is a ball hawk and Atari's hits remind me of a certain 49er Hall of Fame Safety.

I agree with IlikethePackers.

I think some guys here are throwing these guys under the bus without looking at the reality of what happened this season that was much different from last year.

In '07 our sack and QB pressures numbers were outstanding and in '08 they were absolutely horrible. When an NFL QB is allowed to stand back there with nobody in his face it's like throwing darts.

I saw way to many plays where the QB was allowed to sit in the pocket and deliver a deep ball accurately without any pressure and there is just no way a Safety can cover that.

Put these two behind even a decent pass rush and see what they do.

Bigby was hurt so of course he is not going to be as good. He has to be one of the best hitting safties in the game. He was amazing when healthy, forcing fumbles and getting interceptions.

Can he stay healthy, and will Rouse continue to develop? We shall have to wait. I believe both are serviceable, but if they can be upgraded, do it.

Just to make sure my position is clear.. I voted option B.. have faith in a combination of both.

Both have battled injuries the past two years, that is my biggest question about them.. can both stay "available" for an entire season.

Rouse takes alot of bad angles on plays.. but he is a physical beast and in limited playing time has shown flexibility and a nose for the ball.. needs to become more aware of the overall field and his position upon it.

Bigby is a hitter.. I think he would rather smack someone than cover overall.... but he came on late in 07'... enough to tell me that between the two the need isn't great.

Both have work to do in the tackling department.. as a strong safety, whiffs are not an option.

Now.. lets play the hypothetical.. lets say Dawkins was willing to come here for a year or two.. I would pounce and allow both of these guys to learn from one of the best overall safeties I have seen play the game. He has shown he can still play the game, and it would take his attitude and leadership and let it blossom here.

Jimmy Leonard is from just north of me.. played high school ball here and yearly fall talk around here is how about that little "kid" making it and improving as the seasons pass... smart player as mentions and fundamentally sound. Wouldn't be a horrible addition.. backup and a returner.. who knows maybe a starter to boot.

Not sold, but I think Aaron Rouse could have great presence on this team. When I watch him play, he's always around the football and to me that signals a good safety. I want my safety to be around that ball and if bringing in new coaches improves the communication, Rouse gets the nod for me.

Bingo!
You nailed this one on the head. Why the big drop off for '08 when they were both showing large amounts of promise in '07?

You give ANY starting QB in the NFL 5 to 6 seconds in the pocket and he's going to look good.

Now, when your opposing QB is worried someone will blind side him in 3 seconds (which when you're playing the '08 Packers, that's not even a remote concern)....

I think the problems start with our front four.

I like them both. However, some competition never hurts. Thats the truth. Make these guys realize their positions are not locked and someone else can take it. Yeah, they are hard hitting but I'd rather have a guy in there that can cover a guy so being in the wrong position sometimes but hitting hard doesn't do it for me.

I think the out of position remark is way off. First, nobody here knows what there assignment is in the first place to know where they were suppose to be.

Trailing a TE or RB on a route does not mean out of position necessarily. Sometimes it is a good play by the offense.

Bring in more competition for camp, and the best players make the 53 man roster. If that happens to be 4 new safeties so be it. I just want the best players out there.

If Dawkins came here, it would be the same coup as getting Eugene Robinson years ago. If Leonhard would land here, he starts over Bigby or Rouse. I would be happy with either free agent. I won't be happy until that position is finally addressed properly, becasue I feel Collins' potential won't be realized until there is a reliable partner for him. Dawkins would be ideal.
