Maybe the deal was aimed at carrying over cap room towards next season as opposed to being more of a fair value deal for Cole.
For example, the contract was actually worth around 5 million, with the extra 2 million being Likely To Be Earned incentives.
I've disagreed with Porky before that Cole will get starters money, but after reading this I had to rethink what exactly was 'starters money'. The more I think about it, the more I think that Porky is right, Cole will make starters money (at least 2 million / yr)...
Ryan Pickett is scheduled to make 3 million next year, and if Cole is in the long term plans of the Packers he'll be wanting a comparable salary, even if he is a rotation DT in the immediate future.
