PFF's Week 1 2024 NFL offensive line rankings:

1. Detroit Lions
When healthy, the Lions' offensive line was arguably the best unit in the NFL last season. Right tackle Penei Sewell was the league's highest-graded offensive lineman, and Frank Ragnow earned the top spot among centers.

Although the unit lost right guard Jonah Jackson in free agency, the Lions signed veteran guard Kevin Zeitler, who ranked 15th in PFF grade among guards in 2023.

2. Philadelphia Eagles
While the Eagles fielded the NFL's best offensive line over the past couple of years, there are questions about the unit's cohesiveness following center Jason Kelce‘s retirement.

Cam Jurgens, Kelce's replacement, has played only 45 NFL snaps at center so far. Jurgens is being replaced at right guard by Tyler Steen, who played just 71 snaps on offense as a rookie and was not overly impressive.

Lions built themselves through the lines and hopefully they aren't that good when playing the Packers.

Eagles depth chart has former top 10 overall pick OT Mekhi Becton listed as starting RG, his biggest issue is that he hasn't been able to healthy... but a good Eagles OL might make things tough on Friday in Brazil.

5. New York Jets
After performing as one of the worst units of the 2023 season, the Jets' offensive line mightily improved this offseason. Veteran tackles Tyron Smith and Morgan Moses both finished among the 10 highest-graded offensive tackles in 2023 and could form one of the best duos in the league in 2024.

The Jets also get back one of the best young guards in the league, Alijah Vera-Tucker, who missed most of the 2023 season due to an injury.

From one of the worst OLs to one of the best (on paper), though they have to show they can stay healthy, I believe the Cowboys let LT Tyron Smith go due to cap reasons and he wasn't staying healthy for full seasons and OG Alijah Vera-Tucker is one of the best, but I feel like he's missed a couple of seasons recently.

7. Kansas City Chiefs
Joe Thuney might be the best pass-blocking guard in the league, while Creed Humphrey is now often considered the best center in the NFL. Right guard Trey Smith could also be the league’s most underrated offensive lineman despite being the 10th-highest-graded guard in 2023. Those three form arguably the NFL's top interior trio.

Whereas the interior is stout, there are many questions surrounding the Chiefs' offensive tackles, including whether Jawaan Taylor can bounce back after a disappointing 2023 season.

And we took OT Jason Spiggs in front of Joe Thuney and literally took C Josh Meyers one pick ahead of the much more hyped C Creed Humphrey.

11. Chicago Bears
The Bears' offensive line, as it got healthy, was one of the top units in the NFL toward the second half of the 2023 season. Center Ryan Bates is expected to complete the unit and bring it to the next level.

In Braxton Jones and Darnell Wright, Chicago has a promising young offensive tackle duo. And Teven Jenkins has performed extremely well since moving to guard, earning 70.0-plus PFF overall grades in 2022 and 2023.

That's going to suck if the Bears actually get a competitive team going.

And I'm very surprised that they have the Bears so high, though they did have lots of injuries to start last season.

13. Minnesota Vikings
Although left tackle Christian Darrisaw was not able to replicate his breakout 2022 campaign, he still finished 2023 as the third-highest-graded offensive tackle in pass protection despite battling injuries.

While the interior trio of Dalton Risner, Garrett Bradbury and Ed Ingram is average at best, the offensive tackle duo of Darrisaw and Brian O’Neill makes the Vikings' line an above-average unit.

14. Green Bay Packers
Rasheed Walker, a 2022 seventh-rounder, appears to be David Bakhtiari‘s successor at left tackle. And while he went through some growing pains in 2023, his 66.3 PFF overall grade ranked 44th among offensive tackles.

On the other side of the line, Zach Tom built on a strong rookie campaign and was even better in 2023. The Packers lost Jon Runyan in free agency, but Sean Rhyan was rotating with Runyan at right guard toward the end of last season, bringing some experience to the position.

So they have the Packers OL as the worst in the NFC North? I mean the lack of depth scares me, but starters seem more than solid.

LaFleur is not saying what we will do at RG, but they did switch Rhyan to the top of the RG depth chart after previously having 1st round pick, rookie Jordan Morgan listed there.

Objectively, it is the worst.

We have a left tackle who ranked 44th amongst tackles, and someone who is very unproven at right guard as starters... to me, that's not solid.

we have yet to prove we can run for a yard and a half to 2 yards when we need to.

I hope I'm wrong, but I think OL is our weak link. I think ranking number 14 out of 32 teams is rather generous grade.

But I didn't think both the Vikings and Bears had better OLs than us. When our OL is normally consistently great at pass blocking.

In a passing orientated league I will take a solid passing offense anytime. It helps to have a QB who is able to make quick decisions. The bane of the bares was Fields slow analytical process. I don't see a rookie like Williams having the ability to process much faster for at least a season.

Bears 50 was 8th worst. Vikings 47 was 10th worst. Lions had 31 was was 5th best and Packers had only 30 for the 3rd best.

Looking at pressures- Vikings were 3rd most 26.7%. bares 7th at 23.9%. Lions 13th 22%. Packers 23rd at only 18.7%. What is really interesting is the bares had the most time to pass and still were pressured and sacked a lot. Vikings right behind them in the time allowed and ultimate pressures. It probably more a function of a good QB than a good OL but they do work hand in hand along with the ability of the receivers to get open.

I see the Packers OL having improved from last year to this year. JRJ is gone. Rhyan has looked decent in training camp and preseason. Rookies rarely start. Those that do typically take a while to get up to speed in the NFL. Once Morgan gets going he will be an upgrade at RG. Walker may be 44th OVERALL but he was a solid pass blocker. I don't have access to the pass vs run blocking PFF numbers but he was a good pass blocker. Better than 44th. Jenkins was decent in a down year for him. Having more time to recover from his injury he is going to be one of the better LG in the league. That leaves Myers, the center people love to hate. He again was better at pass blocking than run blocking. Last year was pretty bad. This year should be a return to his norm. If he struggles look for Monk to come in a have a crack at it. If this position is the only weak link, the Packers can supplement the protection for him.

Run blocking is nice but overrated in this style of the NFL. Three teams ran more than 50% of the time. Baltimore and SF because they were winning the bares because Fields took off all the time. GB only ran 43% of the time. With the receiving group they have I would much rather pass to set up the run instead of the other way around. Miami had the best yards per carry last year at 5.1 average. The worst was Tampa 3.4 avg. The best passing average was SF at 9.3 while the worst was Carolina at 5.5. The worst passing team still averages more per play when passing than the best rushing team does. Obviously a team can't pass or run for every single play.

As for the OTs blocking grades, of the 70 OTs that had at least 500 snaps last season.

PFF's Pass blocking
22nd - Walker
23rd - Tom
67th - Dillard
But I'd like to note that Tom had a ton of the best edge rushers line up against him last year, and he did a fairly good job of neutralizing most of them. I think his ranking could go up simply by facing an easier pass rusher schedule.

PFF's Run blocking
14th - Tom
47th - Walker
51st - Dillard

Of the 32 Centers with 500 snaps, Meyers was in the bottom 10 of all blocking grades.

The OGs numbers weren't that good either, but LG Jenkins had the 3rd best pass blocking grade out of 65 OGs with 500 snaps. JRJ had his worst year, clearly playing injured at times.

I think this game will be a great measuring stick to judge exactly how good, or not good, our line is. Philly has a good one and should provide a strong standard to measure against.
