Jordan Love and the Packers have agreed to a 4 year $220M contract with and $55M/year in new money is exactly where Jordan Love's new contract lands. The $155 million in full guarantees means the Packers went outside their comfort zone when it comes to the deal's structure.

It's commensurate with the other top of the scale QBs.

When I look at the others I have a hard time saying that I want that guy as the Packers QB.
Joe Burrow, CIN $55M
Trevor Lawrence, JAC $55M
Jordan Love, GB $55M
Tua Tagovailoa, MIA $53.1M
Jared Goff, DET $53M
Justin Herbert, LAC $52.5M
Lamar Jackson, BAL $52M

Maybe Barrows. Probably not Herbert. Tua? He's gotten better each year but has he maxed out? Maybe. Mahomes at $45 per? He's 3 years older than Jordan but he's probably worth losing years of playing time.

The funny thing is, this afternoon I was thinking of posting a thread asking people when they would agree. How long of a deal and how much. I was too busy. I guess I wouldn't have gotten the time frame right and probably a little low on the total salary.

What in the world are we going to do with all this extra cap room?

Prepare for some spin, here...

As of this writing, it appears that Love is a below 21 million cap hit for 2024.

I like to think of that in terms of the over 22 million dollar cap hit the right guard for the Vikings that I cannot remember the name of is costing them.
😁
I also took a peek at the Lions and Goff, three Bears well over that number, and myself feel pretty good about things, especially in light of 49 mil dead cap coming off next year...though there will be a 7.9 mil dead cap hit in 2025 for Devondre Campbell

Kick that cap can down the road!

Yeesh

Just have to ask Jordan to keep spreading the ball around so none of the WRs get that WR1 mindset moving forward.

Don't have a great deal of confidence in that concept

There are now three highest-paid players in league history. Jordan Love is one of them.

The four-year deal has a new-money average of $55 million per year. We’ve gotten our hands on the full five-year contract.

Here’s the full breakdown:

1. Signing bonus: $75 million, with $25 million paid within 10 days, $25 million paid by October 4, 2024, and $25 million paid by December 27, 2024.

2. 2024 base salary: $3.5 million, fully guaranteed.

3. 2025 workout bonus: $500,000.

4. 2025 base salary: $11.9 million, fully guaranteed.

5. 2025 per-game roster bonus: $600,000 total.

6. 2026 workout bonus: $500,000.

7. 2026 base salary: $49.9 million, guaranteed for injury at signing; of that amount, $10.4 million is fully guaranteed at signing and $39.5 million becomes fully guaranteed on the fifth day of the 2025 league year. ($39.5 million will convert to an option bonus in 2026.)

8. 2026 per-game roster bonus: $600,000 total.

9. 2027 workout bonus: $500,000.

10. 2027 base salary: $41.9 million, $20 million of which is guaranteed for injury at signing and becomes fully guaranteed on the fifth day of the 2026 league year. ($31.5 million will convert to an option bonus in 2027.)

11. 2027 per-game roster bonus: $600,000 total.

12. 2028 workout bonus: $500,000.

13. 2028 base salary: $43.9 million.

14. 2028 per-game roster bonus: $600,000 total.

The deal also includes $250,000 in Pro Bowl escalators for 2025 through 2028, based on making the Pro Bowl in 2024 through 2027. There’s also a $250,000 Pro Bowl incentive for 2028, pushing the upside to $1.25 million.

The four-year, $220 million extension ($55 million per year in new money) combines with the existing $10.5 base salary for 2024, creating a five-year, $230.5 million deal ($46.1 million per year).

The deal has $100.8 million fully guaranteed at signing, with a practical guarantee of $140.3 million. After only two seasons, the full guarantee moves to $160.3 million.

The contract binds the Packers to Love for three years. If they’d release him after the 2026 season, they’d be saddled with $20 million in guaranteed salary for 2027, subject to offset.

I was wondering if it might come in below Tua's deal, given that Tua has more experience and was a higher draft pick in the same class. But these things seem to just go up and up whenever a new QB gets a deal. The injury risk for Tua is a factor here I suppose.

Probably a lot more guaranteed in this deal than the Packers wanted to do, but if we're being realistic he was gonna get a shot of 2-3 years no matter what to prove he is or isn't the guy. Looking at OTC , it seems like 2028 is the earliest out, but I'm not sure if I'm reading that right.

Seems like a lot for a 1 year starter, but probably in 5 years it will look pretty reasonable. Happy to see this get done in any case.

It seems everyone loves these backend loaded contracts....but I do not....lets pay for performance and try to match the payment to expected performance as much as possible. If the Rodgers contract taught us anything, and I am not sure it has, it that these contracts can bite us in the bottom in the future.

So what happens to the huge number in 2028? If he does not perform well how much of that can we get out of from a cap perspective?

That scenario means J-10VE has had a very good run and he will have shown he is the man.

These contracts are negotiated by the agents, all they want to show is TOTAL CASH VALUE.
Players know that it is not realistic numbers, that is why you see Larger SIGNING BONUS amounts.

BUT, I can see how some would like the back-loaded contracts seeing as the salary cap keeps jumping by about 10% every year.
