We are having warm weather and freezing rain/snow here and last night about 2AM we woke up to the most God-Awful sound from up the mountain above us. At first I thought it was a jet in trouble, then realized our airport was shut down because of ice.

A long, low pitched rumble got louder and louder and then we realized that an avalanche was coming down off the top of Blue Mountain, right behind us. Fortunately, we are not in any avalanche chutes, nor are any homes near here...(we ain't quite that dumb), but the roar was deafening for about 3 minutes, then..........absolute silence.

This noon I took the risk of venturing out in my truck to take a look, and a slab avalanche came down on the south side of Blue Mountain from about 9,300 feet and settled in at about 4,000 feet. That's almost a mile that baby traveled before flattening out.

As far as we know no homes are gone and no one is missing. I've seen several avalances from a distance of a mile or so, but to hear one and not see it is a whole new ball game. Scary!!!

Yikes. That is scary.

And people were saying how scary earthquakes are. I'd take an earthquake any day over an avalanche.

Metallica, back when they had balls, wrote a song called "Trapped Under Ice." That's not how I'm planning on dying.

As for your answer "Have you ever hard an Avalanche?" Yes. I have. I forgot which James Bond film, but one of them had an Avalanche and James Bond skied it.

I have never heard an avalanche,
& plan to keep it that way.
Glad you're okay.

I'm kind of a wild child, so being able to hear/see/LIVE an avalanche, would be freakin' SWEET!

Zombieslayer....most people who survive avalanches use the "swimming" technique to stay up near the top of the snow. Get your head down slope and swim up and with the snow. We all have "avalance transponders" here, which are a beeper you wear and if by chance you get caught, it sends out signals to your exact location. When our Siberian Husky, Shredder, was alive he wore one any time we went hiking in the winter.

At the base of this avalanche, the snow depth is estimated to be 22 feet and cover an area about 1/4 mile by 1/4 mile. That is alot of friggin' snow.

And, we're suppossed to get another 10-16 inches of snow tonight on top of that ice cover. That ought to make for some real excitement. Gotta check the batteries in my transponder, then check to see if I have enough beer to last a few days.

Never heard or seen one.. unless you count my buddies rattle trap of a truck.. that is freaking loud inside that bucket..

But I think I want to get one of the inflatable balls in which a human can crawl in.. with of course a pocket of air between the outer shell and the inner shell that I would be within.. and go tumbling down an avalanche.. that would be a freaking rush to bounce down the mountain..

I'm with you! I'd love to see/hear one, as long as no one got trapped in it.

I've been in a tornado, and an earthquake. An avalanche would round it out nicely!
It's actually my goal to get to photograph a tornado. I REALLY want to do that before my "dirt nap". I checked into "tornado chasers" on the web, and it costs a couple thousand dollars to go with them for a week. So somehow i have to try to find a cheap way to do it.
