Tried telling you all.

A change in Green Bay: Joe Barry will not return as the Packers’ defensive coordinator, per sources.

Great news. I just hope he picks the right guy for the next hire because it’s time to start thinking superbowl in Green Bay.

I’m not sure I want the Fangio style anymore, tired of the soft defense.

Maybe Wink Martindale?

Jim Leohnard?

Who knows.

I know this sounds like I'm talking out of both sides of my mouth, and maybe i am…

First, I'd like to thank Joe Berry for the effort. He did a hell of a job the last half of the year with poor safeties and backup cornerbacks... so let's give him a little credit at least.

Second, I am glad we're going in a different direction. I think that we are
- weak against the run
- soft
- our tackling is not very good, and
- we need to be more aggressive. I realize that sometimes that's tough with inferior cornerbacks but I think you need to give it a try.

Third, I would love to see Jim Leonard in the job. Wink Martindale is a very intriguing idea and I could live with that as well.

My issue with Barry is he only turned it on when his ass was against the wall. The late season push saved him in 2022 but same push didn't save him in 2023.

It's annoying. He CAN coach, but doesn't know how or seem willing to be aggressive unless his back against the wall.

Barry still could remain on the Packers' staff in some capacity -- a possibility that is being discussed, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Umm what?!?

Which leads me to think maybe they're looking at someone that has coached with Barry before, such as Brandon Staley or Ejiro Evero, whom both worked on the Rams with Barry.

I wasnt high on Barry when hired at all and was only going to give him so much patience. To my my surprise the 2021 defense, while not world beaters, wasnt terrible. Then whatever good there was from the 2021 was immediately flushed down the drain and we got the defense we did the past two years.

This is a huge crossroads for MLF. As GPG stated above, this a move that could make or break winning a title. The playoff performance vs Dallas and San Fran raised the bar considerably. As fun as last season is, going forward we're back to thinking about deep playoff runs as being the norm.

The the rapid growth of the offense may have sown an important seed. Had the the team continued to flounder, MLF would have entered the offseason looking at a hot seat season. What DC would want to hitch their wagon to that? But now with an offense that looks to be one of the best in football going forward, some established pieces on D with some potential young studs and tons of draft capital that looks like it will tilt to the defense this year, the DC job should be an attractive. The best harvest from the late season offensive surge might be landing a DC that can take this unit over the top.
