Packers claimed TE Ben Sims from the Vikings and S Zayne Anderson from the Bills.

Who the heck are these guys? I think they have to be put on the 53.

They will have to be on the 53. Acquiring a TE was expected. I'm not sure another team's castoff safety is THAT much better than the 5 GB already have. We shall see.

Ben Sims looks like a good pickup for our situation, from what I'm reading so far, regardless of which team he came from.

The fact that we poached him from the Vikings, many of their fans seem a bit bent out of shape about that, already makes me a big fan of this acquisition.

I don't know if the Safety.

But I believe TE Ben Sims is a rookie out of Baylor whom the Packers were heavily scouting and used one fo their pre draft visits on. Which usually means you have Gute's clear attention.

https://packerswire.usatoday.com/lists/packers-official-pre-draft-visits-tracker-2023-nfl-draft/

Other players that they used one of their 30, 2023 predraft visits on that have been with the Packers include

WR Dontayvion Wicks, Virginia
RB Lew Nichols III, Central Michigan
QB Sean Clifford, Penn State
TE Ben Sims, Baylor
OT Kadeem Telfort, UAB
TE Camren McDonald, Florida State
DL Karl Brooks, Bowling Green

So really watch that predraft visit list. But after the Packers drafted two TEs early, they didn't use a 7th on Sims and then he signed with the Vikings as an undrafted player.

In the tape I remember, average athlete, or wasn't really getting much separation, but great use of the body and hands for body control and catching with the hands away from the body, and putting his body in-between himself and the ball. As a receiver, he sorta reminded me of an early Tonyan, in that not great, but he does a ton of the little things right and does a good job of maximizing what skills he does possess.

Also the scouting reports said very good as a move blocker, which would be like Dugara is used, but I did see much video of his blocking.

https://www.si.com/nfl/packers/news/no-lie-was-told-packers-give-real-chance-to-undrafted-free-agents

No team spends less on its undrafted free agents than the Packers. Literally. Tight end Ben Sims, who was claimed off waivers from the Vikings on Monday, received more guaranteed money from the Vikings than Green Bay paid its entire undrafted class.

That's because the Packers (partly because of Russ Ball) refuses to ever guarantee base salaries for any player, and they use that as a negotiating tactic with veteran contracts, so they refuse to do it with rookie contracts too.

$10,000 of that was in a signing bonus, but Vikings would of had to pay another $100,000 if no one claimed him. (Not sure how they would work if he ended up in Vikings PS, would that offset it, or would he get double?).

But anyways, since the Packers claimed him, they now would owe him $100,000 even if he is released tomorrow.

But Packers don't do that with their own contracts.

https://www.si.com/nfl/packers/news/packers-undrafted-free-agents-best-group-little-money-can-buy

The Packers have agreed to sign at least 12 players, according to PackersNews.com, NFL insider Aaron Wilson and the schools. It will be the best team a little bit of money can buy.

According to the NFLPA, the Packers’ average signing bonus last year for their undrafted free agents was $6,250. The Packers have never paid a premium for college free agents, and their cap difficulties have meant an additional tightening of the fiscal belt.

Financially, the Packers just can’t compete in signing the best remaining players. Immediately after the draft on Saturday night, the New England Patriots gave quarterback Malik Cunningham a $30,000 bonus. The Dallas Cowboys handed North Dakota State fullback Hunter Luepke a $20,000 bonus.

Moreover, Green Bay was one of only five teams in 2022 that didn’t guarantee a single dollar of base salary to entice anyone to sign.

As one agent said of making decisions, “The most important thing is opportunity. Does my client have a legitimate chance to contend for a spot on the 53 or even the practice squad? For Green Bay, they’ve got a strong history of giving undrafted guys a fair shake. That matters. But if one team is offering $15,000 guaranteed and the Packers are offering $5,000, that’s hard to ignore. Generally, money talks and money means opportunity.”
