At the beginning of the season I would have never guessed the defense would have had that big of a drop off. The D made mistakes last year too, but I thought our D was our strong point.

I agree, but I also think that's one big thing they got wrong. The D was pretty solid last year, but not remarkable, especially given the talent we had on the field. The year before it was a mess, as with the year before that.

So we have all that talent (remember: DL was Kampy, Williams, Jenkins and KGB, plus the other guys rotating in, etc.) and we still weren't great last year, and all the other years we've looked pretty bad. Then we traded Corey, then KGB went down and didn't get back up, then Jenkins got hurt, and blah blah blah.

I was with everyone else; I thought our D was going to be the pillar for this season. We were very wrong, and in hindsight I'm not sure, personally, why I was so confident.

When I look at this years and last years D, there is one glarring thing that stand out. Points Given up

Last year, the team gave up an average of 313.3 yards per game. This year 334.3. For a difference of 21 per game. Not a huge difference. Last year the team gave up 291 points, this year 380. That is a difference of 89 points this season.

Bend don't break. Last year the team gave up yards but was able to limit the damage. This year the Defense became the Bend then Break D.

I hope whoever comes in or takes over as DC, gets more aggressive in the middle of the D. Expecting the CB to be physical and press while letting the rest be soft is a bad mix. Time to head the D back to getting nasty.
The world needs ditch diggers too Danny!!!

Eight starters missed a total of 43 games, including four on defense totaling 32. It was the club's worst bout with injuries since 2005 (11-66).

Do we have last years numbers with this?

Now aren't all players in the draft pretty much the same age (within a year or so)? I think the reason the team was the youngest again was more due to losing 2 almost 40 year olds.

You're right, of course, but the author's point was that by trading back, Thompson increased the team's number of draft picks, thus increasing the proportion of rookies on the roster, thus lowering the weighted average of the team's age.
