1. It would be interesting.
2. I wouldn't mind if the 100-199 were all linemen. No one sees them anyway. Except their wives and mothers.
3. Even removing the linemen from the double digits would increase the availability for other players at other positions.

I think the NFL answer for the next decade or more will be that there are only 63 players on the main roster, make sure they all have their own numbers, and they don't care about the numbers of the rest. So teams can retire 37 numbers as far as the NFL cares (36 before they started allowing 00, as a number).

And the main thing will be to make sure that no numbers are both on the same side of the ball, two guys in offense can't have the same number, and two guys in defense can't have the same number.

PS: Anyone know why #1 and #5 are only unofficially retired and not fully?

100% agree with you. With the 90 man off-season rosters, there aren't enough numbers to retire them.

Sadly it's not about you or even my grandsons. Retiring the number is about the player. A lot of players have had a number, (59 for example) it doesn't increase or decrease my enjoyment of the game. I saw John Anderson play. You probably didn't. Does it change how you view De'Vondre Campbell? Would you think anything different if he wore 58?

I wish the NFL had a consistent NFL rule for all teams to do it for, like you said, a generation, or a set time limit. I think 10 years is too short, as Jerry Jones Cowboys would do it with every QB that starts 5 years for them. But something like 25, sounds great.

Agree with the first part that some standards should be set. The problem is a player that is not Hall of Fame material but could be an all time fan favorite for a team may get his number retired.

Currently, teams can't do that...
Rules state the numbers between 00 and 99.
Rules also state the numbers have to be a certain size.

I am well aware of this.

Yes, that could be changed, but isn't currently available for teams. Also they have enough trouble with two digits, three digits will give them even more troubles.

The NFL just changed their rules for who could wear a jersey number a few years ago. WR and LB can wear single digit numbers. So it is doable.
The size of numbers on players backs were dictated by the NFL because it makes it easier to see on tv. The technology of the tv cameras is 3 or 4 generations better these days. Numerals could be reduced by an inch or two and still be seen by the tv cameras.
Even so, it isn't that big of a deal. Sometimes fans can only see one of the digits on a player. Until the replay. Refs make mistakes on penalties. The game goes on. Jersey numbers are not critical. They are a convenience.

You can say that if you want to. MY point of view is if a player is considered one of the top 5 in franchise history, he has earned it. No one gives it to them. They earn that right.

Perhaps we could use tenths to increase the numbers available... Such as quaterbacks could be 1.1-1.9   Defensive linemen 9.1-9.9 .  The numbers would still fit nicely on the uniforms.

I can hear the announcers now "here comes Joe Blow number 1.3 into the game to take over at quarterback...moving in at slot receiver is number 8.6 Fred Blackmon"

What do you think?😀

I knew #4 and #92 from fans talking about them or seeing them for myself.

And I almost never hear #3 Tony Canadeo be brought up. Wouldn't know about him if his number wasn't retired.

Addressing your opening comment. I think that's my problem. I've often disliked working in Corporate places because of feeling like a number. So, I wouldn't ever want to be remembered BY a number. I think that's my disconnection here. I would want to do the number proud, but the number wouldn't define me.
