Since Stafford, Bradford, McCoy or Tebow haven't declared at least yet, I have the Lions picking Jenkins at #1. Orakpo will go to the Chiefs at #3. I think we should take either Eugene Monroe or Michael Oher (depends which one is left) if we're looking OT, but Michael Johnson if we're looking DE. That is, if we don't trade down from #9, which I think we should do.

The only kind of defensive end I want drafted with a top ten pick is one the size of Mario Williams or Peppers. The top DE's this year are too light in the pants for my taste. Aren't you guys tired of getting run over? I think LT should be addressed, but I would not be heartbroken if we took a top corner, just not a smurf.

Quick point about this statement because I've heard it plenty and will only hear it more. You have to remember that Julius Peppers and Mario Williams weren't the size of Julius Peppers and Mario Williams when they left college. Nearly all speed rushing DEs have to bulk up once they get to the league. So what's important is whether or not they have a frame that can add weight without sacrificing much speed, not what they weigh at the combine. Keep in mind that these guys are 21-22 - they need time to bulk up to NFL level.

NOTE: I'm also very skeptical that there's a real, discernible difference between playing at 275lbs and 265lbs.

If I am not mistaken both Peppers and Mario were 290+ coming out of college.

I am worried about any DE that is under 260 coming out. Yes some can bulk up and add strength without a dramatic hit to their speed. We have 2 270 DE that are developmental now. I do not want another developmental or pass rush only player especially with the #9 pick.

But that is just me.

Can't find info on Peppers, but Mario was 287 coming out of college, so, yes, you are correct. Bad example on my part, but the overall premise is that most college DEs have to bulk up at the next level. It shouldn't be something you shy away from so long as they have the ability to put on weight.

This is interesting: Top 10 DE sack artists in 2008

John Abraham - 263
Jared Allen - 270
Julius Peppers - 283
Justin Tuck - 274
Mario Williams - 283
Robert Mathis - 245
Dwight Freeney - 268
Darren Howard - 260
Aaron Kampman - 265
Trent Cole - 270

The top DEs this year played between 260-270 for the most part. If you look at all the top DE prospects most are over 260 and the ones that aren't are within shouting distance.

I don't like the idea of moving down because the Packers should be able to add an impact player at No. 9. They should be able to grab a DE that can give them 7 to 10 sacks on the year in my opinion. Maybe a run stuffing DT or a starting tackle.

Trading down to say 19 would put them in position to lose out on possibly an elite talent and get a mid tier talent. Granted you can land an elite talent anywhere in the draft as the past has suggested, but adding the 9th pick in the draft to a roster that is still in my opinion the most complete in the NFC North is something I am looking forward too.

Who in round #1 will give us 8-9 sacks?

Orakapo...maybe
Others?

Many people here are saying that they want a DE that will give them a bunch of sacks next season... Recently the top DE's don't do much until their second or third season. Look at Mario Williams and Chris Long.

I agree....rare!

We need to look at FA or trade for an impact guy. Maybe Thompson will be that guy in year #2.

Right now I'm thinking Mays or an OT in round #1.

Im fine with Jenkins, in 3 games he had 2 1/2 sacks.
But I would also like a FA 😉

For those who think Mario emerged this year... they're wrong. Mario had more sacks last year than he had this year (14.0 > 12.0).

He had a good first year too, but that was without Amobi Okoye helping in the middle.
