From PackersTalk:

Does Josiah Deguara Stand a Chance Against the New TEs?

Without a question, one of the biggest needs heading in to the 2023 NFL Draft for the Green Bay Packers, was Tight End. After both Robert Tonyan and Marcedes Lewis departed, the Packers were left with two Tight Ends that only have a combined 47 total career receptions in six combined seasons. These two are Josiah Deguara and Tyler Davis. Deguara holds 39 of those 47 catches and is certainly the most experienced. In the draft the Packers picked up two promising young Tight Ends on Day Two. With Deguara being the most experienced, but not by much, could he lose out his chances to have a breakout season to the young rookies?

Josiah Deguara has been basically a lost weapon since his selection in the third round of the 2020 Draft. He basically lost his entire rookie season to a torn ACL. Since this he has seen snaps in every game but very little targets from former starting QB Aaron Rodgers. Oddly enough, a lot of his production has come from new starting QB Jordan Love. This included a 62-yard touchdown off a screen pass in the regular season finale in 2021. If Love seems to have a connection with Deguara, could he have a breakout season with Love now calling the shots?

Love Could Change Deguara’s Career

Without question, Josiah Deguara isn’t a traditional tight end. Even when he was drafted, he was called an “H back.” This kind of makes him a fullback/tight end hybrid. He can line up in the backfield, on the line of scrimmage, or even in a wide out position. His versatility can make him a mismatch out of the backfield, and it appears Jordan Love is ready to take advantage.

Aaron Rodgers is very much a West Coast offense type of Quarterback. Putting tight ends or running backs in motion right before the snap, or rolling out to complete a quick pass, isn’t exactly his style. Jordan Love, however, can play to that offense. The true Matt LaFleur offense.

Matt LaFleur’s offense is all about scheming players open. One of those players is definitely an H-back type-role. While Aaron Rodgers wasn’t as keen to target this role, Jordan Love definitely seems like he is. While yes, these are short passes, the main goal of these passes is to create yards after the catch. Deguara is a great option as in his college days he was known for his ability to create yards after the catch. In the NFL as well in his small exposure he’s created YAC.

It also doesn’t hurt that Love and Deguara seem to have a very good friendship.

The Bond is Strong

Above is a picture of the Packers contingent from Josiah Deguara’s spring wedding. Of course, you can see Jordan Love present. Deguara and Love definitely have a good friendship.

As we learned with Aaron Rodgers, he liked to mainly targe the ones he trusted. This may be the case with Jordan Love as well, even though hopefully not on the same higher level as Rodgers. Obviously though, there is a trust level between Quarterback and Receiver, and that seems to exist between Love and Deguara.

The rookie receivers may be very exciting and could be big targets this season. But I believe this year Josiah Deguara could be far more productive than he has been in years past.

This year could be a do or die as well for Deguara being a contract year. With Love catering far more than Aaron Rodgers to the true Matt LaFleur offense, we might finally see what Josiah Deguara is capable of. Hopefully so, as I’ve been pulling for Deguara his whole career, and I’m ready to see him get his opportunity to shine.

IMO, this is a very interesting angle....I liked the pick when he came out of Cincinnati, but he screwed up a knee, and thereafter was on Rodgers pay-no-mind list.

I would like to see about 15 more lbs. on the dude.  At 238, he is a bit light for a TE....regardless, who knows.

I certainly don't want to count Dugara out and I believe the coaches did call him one of the leaders in offense, BUT... it becomes harder when they're giving #1 snaps to rookies over the backup on day 1 of OTAs.

Seems like they're going to give the rookies every chance to bite into Dugara snaps counts....

That being said, same thing happened to TJ Lang, as they gave OT Sherrord #1 OG snaps over Lang and I think we know how that turned out.

But Dugara does seem more like an H-back, and his blocking hasn't seemed to be as good as it was as a rookie. But hopefully he can become a dominant H-back and we can get some of the traditional Wide Zone runs back and getting the opponent DL moving East and West more than North and South.

Kyle Shanahan uses FBs to change the blocking responsibilities for defenders coming up, and LaFleaur runs similar stuff to Shanahan (though Shanahan is one of the best play callers in the business)... but I think scheme wise with Rodgers gone, we'll see more Shanahan type stuff and less McCarthy type stuff that Rodgers kept as he liked it, which also means more schemed open stuff and simple catch and runs for TEs and RBs.

I STILL want to see Dillon catch a ball one on one in the flat and just power truck run over a defender one on one and keep going!

They'll keep DeGuara around for a year just so the rookies can see how a pro does his business. But I have high hopes for him. Word is, Aaron didn't like him, nice to see him hanging with Love. They got a nice group going.

Would love to see more wham blocks from the H or Wing TE.  This tactic  keeps  defense linemen less aggressive as they don't know who will be blocking them.

TheKanataThrilla (27-Aug) : Looks like we signed Clayton Tune as QB3

TheKanataThrilla (27-Aug) : Tune or Hooker would make sense
dfosterf (27-Aug) : Clayton Tune cut by the Cards? Don't know if that's the guy, we shall see
TheKanataThrilla (27-Aug) : Per Bill Huber, the Packers will not be bringing back Taylor Elgersma or Sean Clifford on the practice squad, so a new third quarterback
Mucky Tundra (27-Aug) : Schefter must have deleted his tweet
dfosterf (27-Aug) : Hopefully Jerry reaches under the seat cushions and ashtrays of his jet and scrapes up the 45 million apr and spares us further nonsense
dfosterf (27-Aug) : Have to admit the PO'd Cowboy fan videos would be fun to watch. Problem with draft picks is half their fanbase barely knows what that is
beast (27-Aug) : I think Cowboys fans are ready to get their pitch forks and burning sticks if Jerry were to trade Micah
dfosterf (27-Aug) : If Jerry traded Micah to GB, here in northern Va. they would have to quick build yet another data center to handle the internet hate traffic
Zero2Cool (27-Aug) : its signing and trades that you don't hear about, other then announced
Zero2Cool (27-Aug) : If you hear rumors about Packers sign or trade, won't happen. Not how they work
dfosterf (27-Aug) : 19 players in a contract year. Jones called loss to us worst loss in Cowboy history. Forget Parsons trade. Not happenin' Cap'n
packerfanoutwest (27-Aug) : The Packers, meanwhile, are the youngest team in the league for the third consecutive year.
dfosterf (27-Aug) : That it was darkest before the dawn in Bengals and Commanders before they got deals done
Zero2Cool (27-Aug) : what is Schefter saying?
dfosterf (27-Aug) : He was getting Dorito infusion therapy
dfosterf (27-Aug) : He's outta shape. Why, just the other day I saw him splayed out on the trainers table
Mucky Tundra (27-Aug) : Parsons has followed Rasheed Walker on Twitter. Quite the choice
