I wonder if we could replace the linebacker designated player with some other position option going forward. I honestly don't recall the options for a league.

You can get a LB who gets lots of sacks, or tackles, or INT's or what not. The position can give you some "bonus" points. If we didn't have the LB position, we'd just lose one roster spot. There's just not enough fantasy worthy players to fill deeper roster leagues without it becoming very top heavy.
