Kalambayi has played 86 percent of his NFL snaps on special teams over his career. On Monday, the Green Bay Packers announced  that the team had signed linebacker Peter Kalambayi to the practice squad. While the team did not state whether he is considered to be an outside linebacker or an inside linebacker for the Packers, recent history would suggest that he is going to play on the inside for the team.
Originally a sixth-round draft pick for the Houston Texans , Kalambayi came to the NFL by way of Stanford, where he was a two-time captain for the Cardinal. As a prep, he was a U.S. Army All-American, won three state titles in football in the state of North Carolina and was an all-state shot put athlete. This athleticism seems to translate well in terms of his combine measurables, as his Relative Athletic Score ranks high for a pass-rushing prospect, which is what he was coming out of college.

Peter Kalambayi posted a sub 7.00 second cone time at his pro day, but landed an elite #RAS  due to strong marks at the Combine. Great speed, agility, and explosiveness, his downside is size, like many other prospects in this class. pic.twitter.com/Yrv2cvv8X5 — Kent Lee Platte (@MathBomb) April 15, 2018

After spending his rookie year in Houston as an edge defender, Kalambayi made the transition to the box linebacker position. Still, his biggest contribution at the NFL level has come on special teams, where he has registered 784 of his 916 snaps (86 percent)  in the regular season over his career.
Despite contributing for the Texans for three years as a core special-teamer, he was let go when the franchise made wholesale changes this offseason. He was picked up by the Denver Broncos  this summer, but was waived in mid-August as cut downs approached.
This move is interesting, if for no other reason than the fact that the Packers’ special teams units have struggled mightily all season, but no more than two Sundays ago against the Chicago Bears . Outside of the kicking unit, there was little to feel good about in regards to Green Bay’s “third phase of football” against the Baltimore Ravens last night , either.
As we have seen recently with the additions of safety Shawn Davis and defensive lineman Abdullah Anderson, the Packers may be willing to rock the boat to get more out of the low end of their roster at this point in the season. Both Davis and Anderson were activated to the 53-man roster for the first time last week after spending most of the year on the practice squad. Anderson actually saw playing time ahead of Jack Heflin, who has been a week-to-week healthy scratch for the majority of the Packers’ season.
The two most-played special teamers  in Green Bay are both inside linebackers, the same position Kalambayi will contribute at defensively. This very well could be a move to push Oren Burks (274 snaps) and Ty Summers (270) to improve or risk their roster spot, should Kalambayi be called up. Rookie Isaiah McDuffie (129) and “starter” Krys Barnes (96) also contribute on special teams.

I hope it is a move that helps improve ST. We shall see. I don't care about his 3 cone time. Can he tackle? Can he stay in his lane?

Mucky Tundra (22h) : beast, reading about what happened, it sounded like one of those "two guys collide and are moving slow afterwards" type of deals
beast (12-Aug) : I believe Musgrave has been injured every single season since at least a Sophomore in highschool
packerfanoutwest (12-Aug) : Matt LaFleur: “Highly unlikely” Jordan Love plays more this preseason
dfosterf (12-Aug) : Doubs, Savion Williams, LVN, Musgrave all banged up to one degree or another, missing one here I forget

Zero2Cool (12-Aug) : zero help, dominated. preseason

beast (12-Aug) : Martha said Morgan had a lot of help, I didn't watch the OL so I can't say.
Zero2Cool (10-Aug) : Packers LT Jordan Morgan did not allow a single pressure across 23 pass-blocking snaps vs. Jets last night, per PFF
Mucky Tundra (10-Aug) : With buckeye and the reasonable couple, we're currently sitting at 10
buckeyepackfan (10-Aug) : Just posted to re-up on our FFL.
Zero2Cool (10-Aug) : If healthy after, then thats all I care. Well, no drops would be nice
wpr (10-Aug) : I made it through the 1st Q.
dfosterf (10-Aug) : Just gotta figure out how.
dfosterf (10-Aug) : Could have been a worse start, so there is that.

TheKanataThrilla (9-Aug) : NFL Network is broadcasting the game tonight, but not in Canada. Not sure why as no local television is showing the game.
beast (8-Aug) : But the Return from IR designations had to be applied by the 53 man cutdown.
beast (8-Aug) : It's a new rule, so it's not clear, but my understanding was that they could be IR'd at any time
Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : *had to be IRed at 53
Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : beast, I thought the designate return from IR players had to be IR at cutdowns to 53, not before
beast (8-Aug) : It's a brand new rule, either last season or this season, prior, all pre-season IRs were done for the season
beast (8-Aug) : But the Packers would have to use one for their return from IR spots on him, when they cut down to 53.
beast (8-Aug) : I think the NFL recently changed the IR rules, so maybe the season might not be over for OL Glover.
Zero2Cool (8-Aug) : Packers star Howton, first NFLPA prez, dies at 95 😔
dfosterf (8-Aug) : Apparently it is too complicated for several to follow your simple instructions, but I digress
dfosterf (8-Aug) : Zero- Did you see what I posted about Voice of Reason and his wife? She posted over at fleaflicker that they are both "In"
Zero2Cool (7-Aug) : Well, not crazy, it makes sense. Crazy I didn't notice/find it earlier
Zero2Cool (7-Aug) : it's crazy how one stored procedure to get data bogged everything down for speed here
dfosterf (7-Aug) : to herd cats or goldfish without a bowl. They reminded me of the annual assembly of our fantasy league
dfosterf (7-Aug) : out on a field trip, outfitting them with little yellow smocks. Most of the little folk were well behaved, but several were like trying
