Barnett has a role he is suppose to play at MLB. He is under 240 and needs to be free. With the Dline this year that didn't happen.

Just look back at Urlacher, Zach Thomas, even Ray Lewis, many were saying they were washed up. Once the Dline in front of them started playing well again, then they started to look like their old selves again. If the Dline is not doing their job, the LBers suffer.

Urlacher is the same type of mold.. that is one of the reasons I believe him to be highly over rated in the middle.. he can't shed blocks very well.. agreed.. if you are clean you should make plays.. a pulse at middle clean you should make plays..

But I disagree with the Thomas and especially Ray Lewis comparisons.. watch a Ray Lewis in his prime.. dude got flat out stone a block and make a play.. he is stout.. same with Thomas.. Thomas used his leverage to his advantage and was able to shed a block.. Urlacher and Barnett can't.. period.. both are outside backers with speed to spare.. they are play makers but playing in the wrong hole.

Also, I really like Jermichael Finley. The kids' god some talent. Great hands, pretty fast, very athletic. I know he has some attitude problems, but I don't blame him after this past year. He'll mature as he is in the NFL longer.

Great talent, just a little cocky. Once he mellows out, I think he will be a force to be reckoned with. Great later-round pick by Thompson.

You guys should watch his interview after this weeks game on packers.com site. He really seems to have a better attitude going into the offseason than he had earlier. Sounds like Al Harris straightened him out a bit lol.

Nice post.

I am extremely hesitant to get rid of any linebackers we have on the team after this year, especially the group leader (Barnett). Going into the season, I considered the group one of the strengths of the defense, and it ended up being a liability. I have to believe that something was wrong and it wasn't the personnel on the field. Whether it be the play of the D-line in front of them, or how they were coached, or what, I don't know.

I like Wynn, and would like to keep him on the team. I would love even more to see Brandon Jackson get more carries next year. For whatever reason, Grant had a real letdown year. His vision wasn't where it was last year, nor was his ability to elude tacklers in the 2nd level.

What's the weight difference between Wells and Flanagan when he was our center on that quality O-line? Wells is another guy I'm hesitant to lose, because a) he's the brains on the line and b) Rock said a year or so ago he was the most powerful player on the team.

In defense of our LBs, they were a liability because they were worn down. If the DL would do their job, our LBs would have been studs. But by the end of the game, they were already completely drained.

If we improve our DTs, our LBs will be able to shine again like they did last year.

And yes, Wynn needs to stay on the team, and needs more carries.

I so fundamentally disagree.. watching the play of Hawk and Poppinga closely for a few weeks.. while Poppinga showed up yesterday.. they both have played very poorly over the second half of the season.

A microcosm of their play was seen on one of Smith bigger first down runs yesterday.. Jolly stood up his man and Pickett while getting pushed back tied up two olineman.. there was Hawk 5 yards deep on his heels waiting for the back to make a break.. he was in on the tackle but 2 yards past the first down marker.. if he was playing downhill like a backer should on a run play (Part of the problem was him reacting to the play) he had a clear lane to challenge Smith for the right to the first down.. nope.. instead he was sitting an waiting for the back to get near him...

Poppinga showed a little agility yesterday, able to bit on a first move and recover.. something he has shown little of this season to date. More of a 3-4 Outside backer than a 4-3 Backer.. has enough to cover in the flats and the short area zone, but not enough to stay with people down the field in coverage.. on the run side.. he just takes bad angle after bad angle within the last 5 yards to the defender.. his home in this defense might be honestly a pass rusher.. but he needs work.. he only has one pass rush move at this point.. all based on speed.. needs to learn to effectively play with his hands if he is going to develop into a legit pass rusher.
