My first reaction before even reading the story  was BWHAHA. Pete Carroll complaining is funny.

After reading it I was even more amused.

Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll took issue with several calls that went against his team in its 17-0 loss to the Green Bay Packers and said the officials were a "huge part" of Sunday's game.

"I've got some gripes about this," Carroll told 710 ESPN Seattle on his Monday radio show.

The three plays that Carroll discussed in detail were Russell Wilson's first-quarter scramble, Aaron Rodgers' second-quarter fumble and Kevin King's interception of Wilson in the third quarter.

The Packers led 3-0 when Rodgers fumbled a snap near midfield. Seattle's Darrell Taylor emerged from the pile with the football, but officials had already ruled that Green Bay recovered. The ruling was upheld after Carroll challenged.

"Darrell is laying on top of the football and the quarterback was reaching underneath him," Carroll said. "Darrell had it from the moment that ball's on the ground. He got his chest on the ball and was laying on it ... I don't know how they looked at it. He's laying on the ground and the guy's reaching underneath him and they gave it to the offense and that's a big play. God, that's such a big play in the game."

The score was still 3-0 when King intercepted Wilson in the end zone on a third-and-10 throw from the 12. Replays showed King losing the ball when he hit the ground.

"When we throw the ball, Russ throws the interception in the end zone, I don't know, I see the ball on the ground," Carroll said. "The guy's got to finish the catch and I don't know why that was looked at in that manner. They called it, they saw it and all that. But that's points on the board. Russ took a chance right there and it didn't work out for us. We were right down there to kick a field goal."

On Seattle's opening drive, the official's initial spot gave the Seahawks a first down on Wilson's third-down scramble. Play was stopped because of an injury to Green Bay linebacker Rashan Gary. Officials then ruled that Wilson was short of the line to gain a first down, bringing up fourth-and-1 from Seattle's 41.

Carroll took issue with the amount of time officials had to change the spot.

"There's a fellow hurt on the play and so time passes," Carroll said. "We got a first down and we were in the huddle, we break the huddle, we're at the line of scrimmage ready to go and they stop the game and reverse that play. The way we understand it is that the booth has like 20 seconds to make those decisions to overturn a call that might have been wrong on the field. But they had minutes and minutes and minutes. I don't know, did they open up the span of time to look at it? I don't know. I don't know how that happened."

Carroll said after the game that officials told him the spot was unlikely to be changed back to a first down had he challenged. On his radio show, he said he might have gone for it instead of punting had the running play clock not hurried his decision.

"I've never seen that happen before like that," he said. "As they're explaining it to me, they already started the shot clock, so I don't even know what the distance is on the play until I'm looking around. It's fourth down. Oh, heck, we've got to kick the football and kick them deep. That's what I'm thinking. I didn't have a chance to even figure that out in enough time to go ahead and decide to go for it."

Carroll also seemed to disagree with a hold that was called on guard Damien Lewis near the end of the first half that pushed Seattle out of field goal range. Carroll said Lewis "got run over" on the play without elaborating.

Carroll was talking generally about his communication with officials during games when he circled back to Sunday.

"They were such a big part of the game yesterday," he said. "They were a huge part of the game yesterday. So in an effort to try to make sure that we're really on the same page and we're working through it and we call the game together in a sense, you work at it during the course of the game. I've known some of these guys for a long time and they always show respect and I try to show respect, too. They've got a job to do and we've got a job to do, and we've got to figure it out. We don't always see eye to eye, that's for darn sure, and that happened yesterday."

The Packers led 3-0 until AJ Dillon's first touchdown run with 10 minutes, 42 seconds left in the fourth quarter. Dillon's second score at the two-minute mark made it 17-0, the final score in Seattle's first shutout loss since 2011.

"It's really disheartening because that opportunity was there and our guys were ready to go," Carroll said. "We weren't able to get it done and they were. So we always will give them credit and it was a nice win for them, of course, but that was a chance for us in a really big moment to take advantage of something."

Carroll reiterated what he and Wilson said after the game, that the quarterback's surgically repaired finger wasn't an issue in his return. Carroll relayed how he told Wilson that his month long layoff might have been a factor.

Wilson went 20-of-40 for 161 yards and two interceptions.

"As you look at the game, he wasn't as sharp as we wish he would have been," Carroll said. "But neither was the other guy. Everybody missed passes and stuff. So there was some conditions and stuff that play into that. I know everybody wants to go ahead and chase this whole thing about Russell wasn't ready to play. He was ready to go and he did everything he needed to to get that done, and it didn't come out as clean as we needed to in a lot of areas of our football -- not just him."

First he speaks about the fumble. It's an outright lie. Both players were diving for the ball but clearly Rodgers put his hands on it first. He didn't pull it in but his hands were on the ball. Taylor dove on it and wrapped his arms around it but it was after Aaron grabbed it. Everyone not linked to Seattle felt it was the correct call. The officials on the field. The replay official thought so too. The tv analyst agreed as well. At worst the "ol tie goes to the offense" would gie the ball to GB. Seattle should be the very last team to complain about not getting the turnover to go their way. To take it a step further Seattle had about 3 yards all game long. 🤔 EVEN if they got the ball there is no way to infer that will mean they are going to score.

Next he cries about the King interception. Maybe I'm wrong but what I saw was King catch the ball. Get both feet down then the ball came out as he hit the ground. If it was coming loose before that I didn't see it. Yes the WR was trying to pry it loose but I didn't see King lose control until he was on the ground. Yet again Carroll somehow deduces a change int he call somehow magically means points for Seattle. He mentioned a FG. Great that makes it 17-3. It doesn't change the outcome of the game. He even says that he doesn't know. He doesn't know what happened or why but he wants to say they lost the game because of it.

Final tears were spilt over the the officials making the correct all when they moved the ball back during the Gary injury. Come on man. It's a bad break that the replay official had time to review the spot of the ball. Wilson's knee was down before he got to the line of gain. It was the correct call. Crying that the refs made the correct call is so Pete Carroll. "I didn't have enough time to call a play. BULL. You didn't want to go for it, fail and give the ball to Rodgers inside your territory. As you pointed out

But they had minutes and minutes and minutes.

It's not his fault or his coaches fault for being prepared. They just sat their with no idea what so ever. His complain about the clock starting while the ref talked to him is pathetic. He asks like this is the only time this has ever happened in the NFL. He doesn't even call the offensive plays. So he can talk to the ref all he wants while the OC relays the play to Wilson. He was caught unprepared and is blaming the refs. That's a joke.

Not once does he say they got some breaks as well. Calls that went their way. Nope that doesn't fit his whining "It's not my fault we lost" narrative. As I said it's pathetic but also hilarious.

What's even funnier to me is that I actually agree with him lol

First off, something weird is happening were on field refs are changing plays extremely late when they never ever changed plays for before... Only one thing makes sense to me, is some NON-field ref is helping the on field refs by calling stuff down to them.

Which generally I consider an absolutely great idea and should be allowed, with the exception that it's absolutely against the rulebook. If they're going to do it, they NEED to update the rulebook to what they're actually doing... right now the rulebook is just some shitty toilet paper! Because it's not what the NFL is even attempting to follow.

That King interception, based on the new catch rule... was not a catch... he went to the ground and didn't hold it to the ground, I don't believe he got three steps down or made a football move which are the other possible requirements. If that ball came out, which I think it did hit the ground, but noticed the NFL replies available aren't showing the good angle of it, then I think that's a drop.

I didn't get a great look/review of the Rodgers fumble recovery, but that's like the other Packers/Seahawks call in the fail mary game, tie possession goes to the offense, so that's probably good, but questionable still, as I think you could easily argue the defender in both cases showed better possession.

But seriously, Pete Carroll bitches too much.... I honestly used to watch Jim Harbaugh/Pete Carroll games just because I knew I'd enjoy watching one of them cry lol 😂 and somethings you got lucky and it was both of them!

Hey Beast, there is something else I meant to say but got busy and forgot. Pete Carroll is totally ignoring the fact that officials impact every game to some degree or another. I don't see that they impacted the outcome of the Seattle-Green Bay game to a larger degree than any other game.

I remember Bart Starr speaking at one of the annual owner's meetings. He said 6 plays kept them from making the playoffs. Then he went to elaborate. I don't remember what year it was but let's say they were 6-10. Yeah, 12-4 would have allowed them to make the playoffs but he can't simple make a statement like he's in a bubble. If he got the outcome in the games he was talking about who's to say the other team wouldn't have driven back down field with 37 seconds and no timeouts left. A team that doesn't have to score will typically opt to milk the clock instead of pressing for another score while a team that is trailing has no choice other than to try and regain the lead. To act like your team getting one more score would have solved all the problems is deceitful. Well in Bart's case I don't think he was trying to lie. But he was engaged in wishful thinking. The average margin of victory is less than 7 points. It can be said in a lot of games if the losing team had 7 more points, they would have won. Last week only 4 games were decided by 7 points or less. The week before 7 out of 14. 9 of 15 the prior week.

Yes, he's complaining about 3 plays... if we have him 3 points for each play (9) they're still 8 points behind.

Another way, let's say one would be a TD (7), one would be FG (3) but that last one wouldn't of put any points on the board changing... so that's 10 points... and let the Packers correct their FG miss (3), so they would still be 10 points behind.

Anyway you slice it, Seahawks did not deserve to win that game. Did the refs get some calls wrong? Absolutely... but those weren't the difference in the one sided game.

One team got into the end zone twice while the other got in none. Credit the defenses for great games...

In 2021 teams are currently averaging 23.2 points per game, both teams were kept under it.
