IR is certainly a confusing move to me, unless they plan to do an injury settlement or something.

He's not under contract next year, and has little guaranteed money if they were to outright cut him. So I don't get the move, but I'm sure there's some aspect of this I don't comprehend.

Can’t he return from IR at some point this season?

But players whom have not be on the 53 man roster must either stay on the roster, or get an injury settlement release.

If he gets an injury settlement release both sides must agree to how long the team will pay out for him being injured. Let's say... 5 weeks.

After that 5 weeks is up, he can sign with any of the other 31 teams. But he has to wait extra long (I think it's either 3 or 6) extra weeks to resign with the team he was injury released from.

These rules are to prevent teams from sneaking more than 53 guys around.

Does anyone happen to know whether or not his salary would still count against our cap this season with his being designated as IR before the final cutdown, please ? Thanks ! (new guy :-o)

I think it does unless they come to a medical settlement.

Note: There is simple IR... and then there is also Released/IR... if released/IR, then the other 31 teams will get a chance to claim his contract (which rarely happens but can) and the new teams has to put him on their active 90 (or whatever it is) roster.

And if no team claims him (often the case) then he goes to the IR.

That's why beast gets paid the big bucks!

Update: Based on what Devin said here, I'm guessing there is going to be an injury settlement soon.

I think this is referring to his comment of "chinky eyes" an unfortunate slip, but on in our hypersensitive society is a death sentence.

Beast, (or anyone else who knows) if you know can, you elaborate your comment

If he stays on the roster the entire season, then the salary cuts against the Packers (though I don't think it's take much).

If he gets the injury settlement release, then he only gets the amount of weeks they agreed on.

I guess my questions are:

can the Packer say to Funchess "you are hurt and done....and here is $$$$ as an injury settlement in lieu of salary"?
if so, does that go against the salary cap?
could one make the case that doing it this way, instead of just canning him outright, might be very 'player friendly' and improve GB as a destination for FA's
He refused because he wanted to heal and come back next training camp, all while getting paid the entire year. He was released during the offseason.

He was pissed because he was the one player on the roster that did not get a Super Bowl ring, but that's because the Packers tried to release him and he wouldn't agree to an injury settlement.

And yes the injury settlesments and the IR guys count against the cap.

All teams have to do this, so I don't think there is any competitive advantage... and even if there was, players don't assume they'll be released, they won't help except maybe with FAs with agents that think said player might not make the rosters, which is not usually the type you want.

Man you got me curious now, but Packers.com transactions doesn't go that far back and ESPN transaction isn't that detailed for the lesser known guys.

Thank you Wikipedia... CB Josh Bell. And PFT has the story of him being unhappy.

Josh Bell, who spent the year on injured reserve after playing with the team in 2009, wants to know why he isn’t going.

“This is kind of a surprise. It’s unfortunate,” his agent Frederick Lyles told Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. “I don’t know if it’s an oversight, considering the attention being paid to the lockout. We just haven’t been able to reach them and find out.”

Bell will get a Super Bowl bonus share, as mandated by the league. But the team can give a ring to whoever they want. Silverstein writes Bell “probably” isn’t the only player that spent time on the roster who won’t get a ring, but he may be the only I.R. player to get shafted.

“The thing is he’s a part of the team no matter how you look at it,” Lyles said. “He was injured playing. He’s still a part of the roster.”

We tend to agree. We know rings aren’t cheap, but is it really worth saving the money? The Packers weren’t interested in explaining why Bell was left out.

“We haven’t discussed those details publicly,” club spokesman Aaron Popkey told Silverstein. “We feel it’s an internal matter out of respect for everyone involved.”

    PFT  wrote:

I'm not going to spend time looking for articles of this, but it was rumored that the Packers attempted to release him from the IR with an injury settlement, as they didn't believe he had a season long injury. But Bell refused the injury settlement because he wanted to completely heal and be back healthy next training camp. Packers didn't like it and didn't consider him apart of the team, as they wanted to release him and not have to pay him his whole year's salary and count against the cap.
