Can’t he return from IR at some point this season?

To get a return from the IR, you most first be on the 53 man roster, which is why we might see Bak make the 53 man roster Day 1 and then IRed Day 2... because PUP would hold him out 6 games, but IR and return would only hold him out 3 games, unless he's expected to be 100% before week 3 or after week 6.
But players whom have not be on the 53 man roster must either stay on the roster, or get an injury settlement release.
If he gets an injury settlement release both sides must agree to how long the team will pay out for him being injured. Let's say... 5 weeks.
After that 5 weeks is up, he can sign with any of the other 31 teams. But he has to wait extra long (I think it's either 3 or 6) extra weeks to resign with the team he was injury released from.
These rules are to prevent teams from sneaking more than 53 guys around.
Does anyone happen to know whether or not his salary would still count against our cap this season with his being designated as IR before the final cutdown, please ? Thanks ! (new guy :-o)

I think it does unless they come to a medical settlement.

He's not under contract next year, and has little guaranteed money if they were to outright cut him. So I don't get the move, but I'm sure there's some aspect of this I don't comprehend.

So injured players must stay in the main rosters or one of the reserved rosters, which they normally go to IR (injury reserve).
Note: There is simple IR... and then there is also Released/IR... if released/IR, then the other 31 teams will get a chance to claim his contract (which rarely happens but can) and the new teams has to put him on their active 90 (or whatever it is) roster.
And if no team claims him (often the case) then he goes to the IR.
