Sacks are great but pressures are highly underrated, as outside linebackers coach Mike Smith said in this epic rant on Friday.

GREAT FREAKING RANT by OLB coach, basically saying sacks are important, but EXTREMELY OVERRATED, compared to other more consistent stats like pressures per pass rush snap.

I still remember when the Packers switched to the 3-4 (2009?), Kampman was clearly unhappy and not talking to the media.... but suddenly all the guys in the media started talking smack a out how he doesn't fit in this system... (and I do agree they should of let him come out of a 3 point stance, because comem'n man, we know 90% of the time you're not dropping him back into coverage).

But I believe Kampman's pressure numbers were above his average, he just wasn't getting the sacks, but guess what else was up... INTs.... Kampman's pressure were leading to less sacks, but more INTs and media was talking about how he didn't fit, when it might not of been ideal, but it did work when Matthews and Kampman were both healthy.

But back to this, sounds like the coach is very interested it making it enjoyable for his players and getting them hyped on reasonable targets and knocking those target or expectations out of the park. Better pressure per pass rush, weather it leads to more sacks or not, effect the QB!

True! Getting a QB off his game by getting in his face every down is probably more important then sacks. It leads to more bad throws, and INTs.
Of course if the Packers don’t do better against the run then they did last year, the pass rush won’t matter much as teams will just run the ball down our throats.

5 of the 12 playoff teams were in the bottom 10 of run defense, yards per carry stat, including Seahawks, Chiefs, Texans, Packers and 49ers.

While of the playoffs teams, only the Titans were in the top 10 of this stat.

This suggest that per rush play, on average, the playoff teams were kinda bad at defending the run.

Which the Packers were 21st in this pass stat, and I expect they're going to struggle more (despite possiblity being better), because the opposing QBs they're expected to face this year are a LOT better than the QBs they actually faced last year (though I think the opposing defenses will be weaker, and so we'll be back to the standard of fans praising the offense and bitching about the defense).

And they were 26th in rushing yards per attempt, but surrounded by a number of playoff teams there.

While it's sexy to watch the sack I have thought it over rated for a long time. I have to admit it's a bit frustrating to see the pressure almost get to the QB. I yelled at CM3 and his weak hammies all the time.

Still pressures throw off the play more often than a sack does.

Beast I think you are correct that the Packers switched in 2009. Kappy had 9.5 sacks in Ought 8 and only 3.5 in 09. He was Jax the next year. Then again he only played in 9 games in 2009.

Well.....what did the Niners do to us in the 2 games?
Maybe other teams weren’t great against the run, but we were horrible. That killed our chance, and will do it again if they don’t shore it up.

I think the sack is just more exciting to me.
On the other hand an interception is more exciting than a sack because we get the ball back.
So if a pressure causes an interception, I’m good with that.
Otherwise, the pressure doesn’t do much for me.

Of course I hope they can improve a lot.
