https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2020/07/06/patrick-mahomes-deal-has-477-million-in-guarantee-mechanisms/

Details are still coming out, and some of the terms being used are new terms, so maybe they've done something new that no other contract has had, and they are some potential out clauses, if guarantees aren't paid (but by definition guarantees have to be paid, so maybe they'll options?).

Long story short, sounds like QB Patrick Mahomes in now under a maximum of 12 year 503 million dollar contract

It'll be interesting to see if both sides stick to the contract, as teams sometimes try to get out of contracts if a player isn't living up to expectations, and if the new NFL TV contracts are as big of a payday as hyped before coronavirus, Mahomes might be kicking himself and wanting a pay raise before 12 years is up.

503 million.....that’s insane.
And with the way the NFL seems to be heading, there not BE an NFL in 12 years.
I think a lot of people are getting sick of the drama that has nothing to do with the game. At least that’s what I’ve been reading online.
And if there is no season this year, that might push it over the edge.

The Mahomes deal is a lot of money, so why pay him so much?

To begin with, KC secures a top rated QB with a ten year contract extension. That is 12 years with this QB before they have to make another deal. At that time he may be the lowest paid franchise QB. Also, he will generate 10 times his contract with TV and merchandise sales.

Next, Mahomes may not receive the full $503 million. Over $100 million is in incentives to be paid if and only if he meets the incentives stated in his contract. Things like League MVP and TDs in a season, yards thrown, spring workouts, and more.

This notable sports contract does break new ground, but so did others in the past in football and in Baseball and in Basketball and in World Soccer. If it's not coming out of your pocket, why complain.

Yeah, the Chiefs absolutely got a steal as there is no way in hell Mahomes took as much as he could have gotten and the Chiefs have all the options/cards now.

Over the first 4 years, Ryan Tannehill is getting paid than Patrick Mahomes, and then if he plays well, he'll be a free agent and can try to cash in at what will be a higher cap percentage.

So Mahomes loses the ability to get a new deal at a higher cap rate, the Chiefs still have the ability to opt out of the deal (which I think Mahomes is assuming won't happen, and if he stays amazing, it won't).

Mahomes says he wanted to do something that was friendly to chase more championships, I wonder if he'll stay happy on this deal. If so, this could be the future Patriots team right here.

Mahomes has done brilliantly sense he entered the NFL. As talented as he certainly is, he is still part of a team. His future will depend heavily on the other 52 men on KC's future rosters. Lots of great players played on poor teams. KC has done well with Mahomes and Andy Reed. Nothing is always guaranteed and Mahomes does not either.
