Who is eligible for a spot on the practice squad?

Each team can keep 10 players on its practice squad. Eight teams are allowed an 11th player as part of the league’s International Player Development Program.
Up to four of those 10 players can have two accrued NFL seasons. So, was a player on the 53-man roster for at least six games of two NFL seasons? Sorry, they’re out of luck.
It used to be that three weeks of an NFL season spent on a practice squad counted as one full season of practice squad eligibility. Now, that number has been increased to six weeks, which expands some players’ eligibility.
A player can spend no more than three seasons on any practice squad.

How are practice squad players compensated?

Practice squad players must be paid at least $7,600 per week for the 2018 season. If a player is on a team’s practice squad for the entire regular season, that amounts to $129,200 for the year.
Teams can pay practice squad players as much as they’d like. They’re not limited to that minimum, and practice squad salaries do count toward the cap. Most teams tend to pay salaries closer to the minimum, though.
If a practice squad player is signed to another team’s active roster, they will receive a minimum of three game checks, no matter how long they remain on that active roster. They can be cut after a week, but they’re still getting three game checks.

Just Asking
Wouldn't it make sense to park an expensive veteran, like a backup QB, on the practice squad to make salary cap room? If another team takes him...SO WHAT?!?! It permanently frees up the cap space.

Am I all wet on this?

I think that this is technically feasible. Practically, however, there are a number of problems.

"Up to four of those 10 players can have two accrued NFL seasons. So, was a player on the 53-man roster for at least six games of two NFL seasons? Sorry, they’re out of luck."

So 4 players could have played up to two seasons (on the 53 for at least 6 games in each season). It's not clear to me if this rule allows more than 2 and less than 3, or if it's simply more than two period - so 10 or 15 year veterans could qualify, but I do not think beyond 3 year vets are eligible.

So theoretically Tim Boyle and Deshone Kizer would be eligible (1 year and 2 years respectively). But the list of expensive veteran QBs that are eligible, and would be interested in being a PS QB (if a QB is likely to sign an expensive contract, why would they want to sit on the PS?), would likely be very short (potentially 0).

I'm not sure if either of GB's backups would make it through waivers and onto the practice squad. This is probably true for any QB that would fall into the expensive veteran category.

So expensive veteran and practice squad eligible are typically mutually exclusive concepts.

Also based on your article, it looks like it would count against the salary cap still, so what good would putting an expensive player there? As there would be no cap savings, and you couldn't actually play him, despite him costing a pretty penny. Plus if a guy wanted playing time (most do), then wouldn't they rather be on the 53 man roster instead of a practice squad?

An "expensive veteran" is going to have 2 acrued seasons.

Since Kizer started 15 games in Cleveland and was on the 53 man roster all last year, he is not eligible.
Boyle only has 1 accrued season so he would be eligible.

Would the Colts offer something for Kizer?
