Why would The Packers let it be known they are showing interest in any player?
Would just create a bidding war with other teams.

Maybe Gute called KC just to see what they were asking, said he wasn't going to let any opportunity go without checking on the player.
I guess you could call that showing interest, I call it Gute doing what he said he was going to do.
