Alex Smith recovery timetable keeps getting longer

The news on Alex Smith continues to worsen.

I’m not ready to say he won't return to football, but it is time to revise the initial thought that the Redskins quarterback should reliably be ready for the start of the 2019 season.

Infection was always the worry with an open fracture (where the sharp end of the bone sticks thru the skin). His initial emergency surgery was more to prevent infection than to fix the fracture.

With good quick treatment like Smith undoubtedly had, the risk of infection is well under five percent. But it has happened here.

The early news of infection was concerning. The word of multiple debridement surgeries to clean up necrotic (dead) tissue and help cure the infection are normal and hand in hand with intravenous antibiotics and that in and of itself didn't mean a longer timeline for recovery, even if it was a difficult infection like MRSA.

However, a patient typically goes home within two days of such surgery, and Smith is in the hospital three weeks after his Nov. 18 injury.

Now, the latest news of the need to remove the plates and screws ratchets up the worry and delays the recovery timeline.

Expect to hear word next that Smith has an external fixator (a system of pins/wires with rods, like an erector set similar to the look of scaffold on the outside of a building) applied to his leg. This is necessary as the plates/screws holding the fracture were removed. A cast would not work due to the need to access the wound. The apparatus looks archaic and scary but is necessary in these situations.

The original implants needed to be removed, as once metal is contaminated, it makes it very hard to cure the infection without its removal.

It will be multiple weeks before more definitive fracture fixation can finally be done.

Smith is headed for several more surgeries.

The next worry is coverage of the fracture.

Multiple debridement surgeries means the loss of skin and tissue. The question is will he have enough to cover the underlying bone.

By video, the fracture is likely more distal (towards the ankle). One can feel your own lower leg and see that it is mostly skin and bone around the ankle, as opposed to higher up where the bone is harder to feel and more easily covered by muscle.

At a minimum, Smith will need two more surgeries. One will be to close the wound and the other to remove the fixture and fix the fracture.

He could have many more if there is enough damage or loss of skin.

If he needs a skin graft, that cannot be applied directly to the bone. One needs to transfer or move muscle.

If this happens, the situation escalates more and Smith’s career would be in jeopardy. A transfer of the calf muscle would affect strength. A free flap where muscle was transferred from another area of his body would lead to a long recovery. (This type of procedure is what is used in distal third tibia which is where I suspect the fracture and wound issue are.)

At this point, the start of ’19 is in jeopardy, as the bone healing clock likely won’t start until a minimum of six weeks from now, adding to the original 6-9 month recovery timeline.

Let’s hope we don't hear about a grafting procedure, as that could signal the end of his career.

Smith is done. He's had a good career. Hang it up, recover, keep investing your money into other businesses, and enjoy retirement from football.

That really hurts for the Redskins if he is done. That was a lot of guaranteed money and a big salary. Not sure if there are ways to manipulate the cap when a player is a injured this way and may be forced to retire.

Scary situation. I really hope to hear some positive news soon on his health without any talk of football.

He was having a great year. Sad to have to go out this way.
His health is what’s important going forward.
Football is a game. Not worth losing your permanent health to try to return.

The good news is that Alex Smith has finally gone home for the holidays.
.

Though on second thought, the way that's worded makes it sound like he's being placed on hospice. 🤣 [giddity] [notme]

Mucky Tundra (20-Nov) : Matt LaFleur without context: “I don’t wanna pat you on the butt and you poop in my hand.”
beast (20-Nov) : We brought in a former Packers OL coach to help evaluate OL as a scout
beast (20-Nov) : Jets have been pretty good at picking DL
Zero2Cool (20-Nov) : He landed good players thanks to high draft slot. He isn't good.
Zero2Cool (20-Nov) : He can shove his knowledge up his ass. He knows nothing.
beast (20-Nov) : More knowledge, just like bring in the Jets head coach
Zero2Cool (19-Nov) : What? Why? Huh?
beast (19-Nov) : I wonder if the Packers might to try to bring Douglas in through Milt Hendrickson/Ravens connections
Zero2Cool (19-Nov) : The Jets fired Joe Douglas, per sources
packerfanoutwest (19-Nov) : Jets are a mess......
Zero2Cool (19-Nov) : Pretty sure Jets fired their scouting staff and just pluck former Packers.
Zero2Cool (19-Nov) : Jets sign Anders Carlson to their 53.
Zero2Cool (19-Nov) : When you cycle the weeks, the total over remains for season. But you get your W/L for that selected week. Confusing.
packerfanoutwest (19-Nov) : the total and percentage are the same as the previous weeks

packerfanoutwest (19-Nov) : the totals are accurate..nrvrtmind
Zero2Cool (19-Nov) : I don't follow what you are saying. The totals are not the same as last week.
packerfanoutwest (19-Nov) : ok so then wht are the totals the same as last week?
Zero2Cool (19-Nov) : NFL Pick'em is auto updated when NFL Scores tab is clicked
Martha Careful (19-Nov) : The offense was OK. Let's not forget the Bear defense is very very good.
packerfanoutwest (19-Nov) : Who updates the leaderboard on NFLPickem?

Martha Careful (17-Nov) : comment of the day Z2Cool "Bears better than we want to admit. Packers worse than we think. It's facts."
Mucky Tundra (17-Nov) : my worst case scenario: Bears fix their oline and get a coach like Johnson from the Lions and his scheme
Zero2Cool (17-Nov) : Bears get OL fixed amd we might have a problem
buckeyepackfan (17-Nov) : Pretty sure they already have scouting reports on guys who aren't even starting for their college team. The future is now for me.
buckeyepackfan (17-Nov) : I tend to let Gute and Co. Worry about the future.
beast (17-Nov) : That's great news and Packers need to keep upgrading their OL, DL and DBs this off-season, so missing one guy doesn't kill them

buckeyepackfan (17-Nov) : Jaire and Evans Williams are both ACTIVE! Good news.
Martha Careful (17-Nov) : The badgers really need to change the whole offensive scheme. No draws no screens plus the quarterback is marginal
Cheesey (17-Nov) : If the Badgers had a decent QB, they would have won. The guy can't hit a wide open receiver
Martha Careful (17-Nov) : chop block
Martha Careful (17-Nov) : there was a very questionable job Block call that upon viewing replay was very borderline
beast (17-Nov) : How so? (I didn't watch)
