Which of these contract year players do you think will do the best in 2018? worst? Or maybe if people are interested, maybe try to rank who you think will be best to worst in the 2018 season.

5 important Packers entering a contract year in 2018
OLB Clay Matthews
WR Randall Cobb
S Ha Ha Clinton-Dix
RB Ty Montgomery
DE Muhammad Wilkerson

With Petine's system, I think DB coverage is going to be especially important because he likes going high risk, which is why I think Haha will be best, plus he's finally done with school and it's time for a bounce back year. Matthews always has the risk of injury but Pettine seemed very interested in being creative with Matthews. I'm not sure how much 3 DL the Packers will play.

I had the offensive guys last, because I've just been down on Cobb in recent years. Hopefully he makes me eat my words, but I didn't think he was worth that huge contract and I seem to be right so far. Of course I've heard that Joe Philbin is the "slot king" and expect the slot to be used much better since he's back (and note, part of the rumor reason Cobb's contract is so high, is because the Dolphins (led by Philbin at the time) were offering him even more money). If the Packers OL is fully healthy, I really love Monty's potential... but he simply has an injury risk to him, the OL and more competition from Williams and Jones.

Others that could be UFAs after the season include
QB Brett Hundley
FB Aaron Ripkowski
TE Lance Kendricks
TE Marcedes Lewis
OL Byron Bell
LB Jake Ryan
CB Davon House
CB Quinten Rollins
CB Demetri Goodson

I have been thinking that Wilkerson and Cobb will be having a big year. Wilkerson back under Pettine's leadership will hopefully return to his probowl form. Cobb, I just feel he will benefit from more targets from Aaron. If he can stay healthy he can be a huge part of the O. Unfortunately he has been dinged up so often I don't know if he can ever get back to the form that got him his last big contract.

If we cut Clay or traded Haha I would be OK with it. I wouldn't mind working on an extension on Monty just because we can get him cheap as we have created of bit of a mess with the guy. Wish we would put him back at slot and sporadically use him as a runner to keep the D off-balance.

I think all five will have a good season but if forced to rank id go:

Cobb
Matthews
Montgomery
Haha
Wilkerson

The last time Cobb was in a contract year he put up big numbers, Rodgers is going to lean on him pretty hard this year imo. I like haha and Wilkerson and wouldn't be surprised if they succeed but they have more question marks. Were they misused in bad systems last year or are they just not very good?

Dix, Wilkerson, Matthews.

Montgomery maybe, as a slot guy. They need to use him less. They got Aaron Jones and Cobb, both can motion out of the backfield and run a route, it’s just that they’re much smaller targets. Monty needs a pitch count to keep him healthy.

Though I have to admit, I have thought about the idea of trading for FS Earl Thomas many times, which sometimes has included trading away Haha to make room. Though it seems like the Safety market is at an all time low (at least the SS market), FS might be different.

For at minimum, I think the Seahawks will want at least a 3rd because that's probably what they would get as a comp pick, if they simply wait for him to become a FA. And rumor had it they were asking for a 2nd AND middle round pick (say 4th or 5th) from the Cowboys.

If they're willing to be creative with Graham then they have unlimited options... as Graham could probably be asked to play anywhere from Traditional TE role, to outside possession WR role.

In different ways, I think both Haha and Wilkerson's problems have been environment problems and negative reactions to those environment problems. Wilkerson's environment problem being the changing of coaches while with the Jets and his negative reaction to it. While Haha's environment problem being, not being able to trust his teammates in coverage the last two years... and Capers changing the scheme up, to a more conservative one, in an attempt to help the struggling CBs. And the new environments changes might be just what they needed.

Monty... Wish we would put him back at slot and sporadically use him as a runner to keep the D off-balance.

Also nerd, so you want Monty in the slot and Cobb as the RB? Seems like madden, just siwtching players all around 👅 Cobb and Jones both lack power and struggle in pass protection... which they can get away with some because of the ability running routes, but ideally, you'd like someone who could pass block too.

For the record I still think Montgomery could be a star at running back and that's the position he should play. When the defense puts out a lineup to stop the run you have him split outside sometimes. When they go light in the box run it up their gut. With Montgomery I only question his availability, we all know his injury history and his competition (Jones) needs his snaps too.

I'm interested in seeing the Packers run their 2 TE 2 WR 1 RB formation. If a team only has 2-3 Cornerbacks on the field that means at least one of Montgomery, Graham, Cobb, or Adams is covered by a linebacker/safety. That's a big mismatch.

But I feel like Lewis at TE would really help the run blocking game, he can help chip block before going out in a route and at times he seemed still athletic to make plays in the passing game, especially when match-up up on a LB. My only problem is then you got two slot guys in Cobb and Graham. Which do you ask to play outside WR?

Of course, the Packers might just simply go with 3 WRs and TE Graham instead, which doesn't help with blocking as much, but gives more potential passing game mismatches because then one of the CBs is on Allison (or whomever the 3rd WR is).
