Had the Green Bay Packers drafted a tackle in the first few rounds of the NFL draft, then perhaps Bryan Bulaga's future would be in question.

But after general manager Brian Gutekunst waited until the fifth round to take an offensive lineman -- and it was one the Packers see as a guard -- he essentially gave assurances that Bulaga will be on the roster whenever he's cleared to return from the reconstruction of his torn ACL.

I wish I had more confidence in Spriggs or Murphy. They would save nearly $8 million if they released him but they have a $3 million hit in dead cap money. They will probably keep Bryan one more year.

And I don't think it's just Bulaga but Randall Cobb too, who they reported attempted to extend, but at a lower (maybe much lower) amount per year than his current deal. If they get a good offer, or if their backups play well early on, then either or both could be gone in my opinion... though as of right now I don't think that's going to happen.

It looks like BG tried to restructure a few players salaries (Bulaga, Cobb and Matthews) and they all called his bluff. Other than Cobb I am not really sure who we have on the roster who might be able to replace them.

They should offer contract with incentives in them.
Make them EARN their big paydays.

No reason not to keep Bulaga unless the Packers are confident they have an improvement at the position. In my opinion, they currently do not, but maybe the rookie surprises like Bacteria did in his rookie season. Keeping Aaron Rodgers healthy is paramount, even if it means overpaying a bit. That's what happens when the team doesn't have sufficient depth.

Well, if they want to keep playing here, they may have to accept a pay cut.
No one likes to, but if you haven’t performed up to your pay, maybe you need to take a look in the mirror and reassess your own value.

And for a while there... it seemed like players were taking a pay cut... and the team would then wait a year and then release them with lower dead space because of the redone contract... so even redoing their contract didn't help a number of players stay put.

NFL teams often aren't loyal to non-QBs... even if those players work with the team.
