Do you want Johnson?

After trading Damarious Randall, Green Bay desperately needs an influx of talent at cornerback. Could they go the free agent route? With cornerbacks flying around this week, Packers  fans didn’t expect Green Bay to be sellers in the market.

Sending Damarious Randall to Cleveland for DeShone Kizer , though, was as much about Randall’s standing in the locker room with fellow players and coaches as it was his talent. ESPN reported a number of veterans wanted Randall cut last season and this trade was the culmination of an early career marred by inconsistency and a lack of discipline from a player undeniably possessing talent.

But Brian Gutekunst reportedly inquired about the recently-released Richard Sherman , and according to Bob McGinn , he will be targeting Rams  cornerback Trumaine Johnson  in free agency.

The 28-year-old Johnson played on the franchise tag  in 2017 after a breakout 2015 campaign when he snagged 7 interceptions.

That said, Johnson didn’t play up to that deal and will be looking for a major contract this offseason, somewhere in the $13-15 million range. Are the Packers willing to eat up their entire free agent allotment (at current count) to bring a talented, but inconsistent player?
Green Bay could structure the deal with more money coming in 2019 and 2020 when the Packers should have much more cap space, and restructured contracts could be coming for Randall Cobb  and/or Jordy Nelson .

Johnson is the kind of big, physical corner Mike Pettine loves at 6’2 213 pounds, but he ran just 4.61 at the combine and falls under the preferred draft pick threshold for the 3-cone. In fact, his 3-cone time is in just the fifth percentile of corners.

That said, he’s one of the biggest and longest corners in the draft and his ability to lock on and redirect receivers mitigates some of the concerns with his speed. You want someone who has the size and physicality to go toe-to-toe with the Julio Joneses and Alshon Jefferys of the world, it’s someone like Johnson.

If the reports are true and the Packers are in fact interested in Johnson, his athletic profile from the combine may not matter, an insight in itself when it comes to the thinking of this new front office.

Once the Rodgers contract gets done—they’re just waiting on Kirk Cousins —Green Bay could create more space, as could moves with Cobb and Nelson, so inking a deal for Johnson doesn’t have to blow the entire budget. It wouldn’t be that difficult to create enough space to also add another impact defensive player like Muhammad Wilkerson .

Given what Gutekunst said about wanting to be in on every free agent, to be in position to sign them if they so choose, his apparent interest in three of the biggest fishes on the offseason market suggests he’s a man of his word.

The next step will be putting those words on paper with a signature at the bottom.

But it seems like the Packers are targeting tall CBs, specifically those at least 6'2". I'd also like to look into CB Aaron Colvin about potentially moving to SS/slot CB.

As comforting as it would be to see Trumaine Johnson playing CB for the Packers, the price that he would command is, IMO, beyond reason. 17+ million or more per year is far to expensive. GB could be driving up his price in an effort to bleed money from another teams cap.

I'm guessing we're going to hear how the Packers might be interested in Colts FA Rashaan Melvin and Giants Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie (who they reported want to cut his salary) because they're both 6' 2" CBs as well.

dfosterf (24-Jan) : I'm going with a combination of the two.
beast (24-Jan) : Either the Cowboys have no idea what they're doing, or they're targeting their former OC, currently the Eagles OC
Zero2Cool (23-Jan) : Fake news. Cowboys say no
Zero2Cool (23-Jan) : Mystery candidate in the Cowboys head coaching search believed to be Packers ST Coordinator Rich Bisaccia.
beast (23-Jan) : Also why do both NYC teams have absolutely horrible OL for over a decade?
beast (23-Jan) : I wonder why the Jets always hire defensive coaches to be head coach
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Still HC positions available out there. I wonder if Hafley pops up for one
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Trent Baalke is out as the Jaguars GM.
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Jeff Hafley would have been a better choice, fortunately they don't know that. Someone will figure that out next off season
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Aaron Glenn Planning To Take Jets HC Job

wpr (22-Jan) : Beast- back to yesterday, I CAN say OSU your have been Michigan IF the odds of making the playoffs were more urgent.
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Glad to hear you are feeling a bit better.
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : I've been near death ill last several days, finally feel less dead and site issues.
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : It is a big deal. This host is having issues. It's frustrating.
Martha Careful (22-Jan) : just kidding...it was down
Martha Careful (22-Jan) : you were blocked yesterday, due to a a recalcitrant demeanor yesterday in the penalty box for a recalcitrant demeanor
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Was that site shutdown on your end or mine? No big deal, just curious
beast (21-Jan) : That way teams like Indiana and SMU don't make the conference championships by simply avoiding all the other good teams in their own confere
beast (21-Jan) : Also, with these "Super Conferences" instead of a single conference champion, have 4 teams make a Conference playoffs.
beast (21-Jan) : Also in college football, is a bye week a good or bad thing?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : The tournament format was fine. Seeding could use some work.
beast (21-Jan) : You can't assume Ohio State would of won the Michigan game...
beast (21-Jan) : Rankings were 1) Oregon 2) Georgia 3) Texas 4) Penn State 5) Notre Dame 6) Ohio State, none of the rest mattered
wpr (21-Jan) : Texas, ND and OSU would have been fighting for the final 2 slots.
wpr (21-Jan) : Oregon and Georgia were locks. Without the luxury of extra playoff berths, Ohios St would have been more focused on Michigan game.
wpr (21-Jan) : Zero, no. If there were only 4 teams Ohio State would have been one of them. Boise St and ASU would not have been selected.
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : So that was 7 vs 8, that means in BCS they never would made it?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : A great game. Give ND credit for coming back, although I am please with the outcome.
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : FG to make it academic
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : and there's the dagger
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : ooooo 8 point game with 4 minutes to go!
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : ooooooooohhhhhh he missed!
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Ooooo that completion makes things VERY interesting
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Game not over yet
beast (21-Jan) : Oh yeah, Georgia starting quarterback season ending elbow injury
beast (21-Jan) : Sadly something happened to Georgia... they should be playing in this game against Ohio State
beast (21-Jan) : I thought Ohio State and Texas were both better than Notre Dame & Penn State
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame getting rolled
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : Ohio State just got punched in the gut. Lets see how they respond
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame vs the Luckeyes, bleh
