We should get prepared for the 80's people. Aaron Rodgers is gonna get a massive contract that's going to ruin the depth of this roster. It's all doom and gloom.

It might have seemed awkward for Mike McCarthy to talk about his new general manager with that person, Brian Gutekunst, seated next to him in the private room of a downtown restaurant, but the Green Bay Packers coach was asked what he needed from the first-time GM.

“Consistency, support, communication, stay the same,” McCarthy said Wednesday during a break from the NFL scouting combine. “I believe that’s the best advice I can give.”

Then Gutekunst butted in.

“Really, really good players,” Gutekunst said.

To which McCarthy replied: “I’ll try to keep the pressure off you.”

We know we will keep him around for 2 or 3 more years no matter what happens (barring a career ending injury of course) and we all know the cap hit after the first two years will be tremendous so you might as well guarantee the money early on and reduce the dead money at the end if the cap hit becomes too much to handle.

That's what the 49ers did with Garoppolo. He got a ton of guaranteed money but its set up that most of it counts in the first two years (28 million dollar roster bonus in 2018 counts all in 2018 so its not spread out over the length of the contract) . We all know that he will get a minimum of two years to prove himself so why not guarantee it. If he turns out to not be the second coming of Tom Brady they can cut bait with very little dead money.

The biggest difference of course is that the 49ers have the room to take on a 37 million dollar cap hit in 2018 so they can get a huge portion of the guaranteed money off the books right away by offering it as a roster bonus as opposed to a true signing bonus thus reducing that part of the cap hit in subsequent years.

Its fair to say that drafting Aaron Rodgers was the defining moment in Ted Thompson's career in Green Bay. Some have said Aaron Rodgers made Ted Thompson. I can't help but wonder if Ted bailed when he did because he didn't want Aaron Rodger to break him as well.

The bottom line is Aaron Rodgers is most likely going to sign the richest contract in NFL history pretty soon. It would be naive to think it won't impact the rest of the team in the way of having less money to spend on other players. Having less money to spend, in theory, means having less talented players at the other positions. That means the GM has to be all that much better at sniffing out talent. How he handles Rodgers' extension may be the defining moment in Brian Gutekunst's career in Green Bay as well. When it's all said and done I hope to hell Gutekunst doesn't wish they would have gone with Elliot Wolf after all.

sschind, you should rush right over and get Mark Murphy to give you the GM job.
After all you are so much smarter than anyone they currently have. You could set them straight and get wealthy at the same time.

Imagine that everyone, a real genius among us, who knew?

I'd like them to sign him to a 10 year $200 million dollar deal. Spread it out.

GB's HC and GM both know that unlike some online forum bigshot want-a-be's, they must come face to face with the public and have the balls to take the blame/accolades for their actions. That said, we should all realise that telling the Packer Nation what they plan to do would also be telling all the other 31 NFL Teams what they plan to do.

That said, it should be known that the Packers do read and are aware of public opinion. They are aware of most of the proposed deals, trades, draft picks, and player position change recommendations. I'm sure that they laugh at a lot of the suggestions, but just maybe sometimes they get an idea or two from the public.

So let us patiently wait and see what unfolds as the Packer's new era begins. [biggrin]
