Rex Ryan says Packers defensive players who love football have "died and gone to heaven" since they now will be playing for coordinator Mike Pettine.

It's nice that Ryan is so pumped up about him. Still, this article is a bit misleading. Buffalo may have had the #10 defense (for total yards) in 2013. But going back to 2011 they were 7th, 2012 11th so it's no shock for them to be 10th in 2013. They did drop off to 29th in 2014 after he left.

I didn't check Buffalo's pass, run or scoring numbers for all those seasons but they were a rather mediocre 20th at 24.2 points a game in 2013.

And to say he's the smartest guy in the room is questionable. I bet Aaron Rodgers would give him a run for the money.

But I think you got the defensive yardage stat backwards (that or maybe I do)... as you sorted the defenses by most yards given up (which is a BAD THING), instead of sorting them by the least amount of yards given up (good thing). --- don't worry, it happens to all of us, that run though numbers ---

So Bills yardage and points per year - Mike Pettine was them only in 2013
2011: Yards: 26th (7th worst) - Points: 30th
2012: Yards: 22nd (11th worst) - Points: 26th

2013: Yards: 10th (23rd worst) - Points: 20th

2014: Yards: 4th (29th worst) - Points: 4th
Jim Schwartz was their DC in 2014 and is now with the Eagles.

In 2014 Mike Pettine joined the Browns
2014: Yards: 23rd (29th worst) - Points: 9th
2015: Yards: 27rd (6th worst) - Points: 29th

So in the 3 years that Pettine didn't have Rex Ryan above him... he had 1 year in the top 10 in yards (with the Bills) and 1 year in the top 10 in points (first year with the Browns).

Also it might need to be factored in, that the Browns reported FORCED the coached to start Johnny Manziel during Pettine's first year and into his second year, which got offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan to resign from the position after the first year (PS: Awesome Coordinator pick there IMO, by Pettine)... but that second year, it seems as they lost the Browns' team... so I certainly don't believe he should get all the blame for that horrible 2nd year... as there were exterior factors effecting things there.

Anything above 20th would be phenomenal for an Aaron Rodgers-led team.

It don't matter much about yards to me. If he can help us get off field on third down and keep the enemy under 19 points. It'll be Super Bowl baby!!

Buffalo in 2013 was only 20th in points allowed yeah but in points per drive they were 11th even though their average starting field position on D was 31st (also probably ties into low yardage allowed stat). Their D was on the field for 209 drives when the next closest team was 201. That's basically an entire game more than the next closest team and only 7 teams were even over 190 drives.

The stats I really love from his year as DC in Buffalo is the ones that show both his aggressiveness and how good this works against opposing QBs.

He blitzed on nearly 40% of plays in Buffalo. You'd think that'd lead to a lot of big plays, but he seems to know exactly when to call them. That resulted in opposing QBs completing just 55% of passes and compiling a passer rating of just 75.

The overall yardage is quite scewed, like Steve said, because opposing QBs managed to throw for 40-50 times nearly every single game.

The one thing that does worry me is the amount of big runs they gave up. They lead the league in runs over 20 yards. I don't know if that's a result of a very mediocre LB-unit, not getting fundamentals down, bad play calling or just accepting run yardage as long as they're stopping the pass.
