I'll be heading up to "the great white north" Friday. It's my first attempt at hunting since my back fusion surgery in 2015. I haven't been able to hunt for 3 years because of all the pain. So I'm excited to give it a try. I have one of the only 375 antlerless tags for Marinette county public land, so if I see a deer and I know I can make a good shot, I will take it. I hunt for the meat, but if a big buck comes by, I would take it of course.
Any of you guys venturing into the woods this weekend? It's going to be VERY windy according to the forecast, and maybe an inch or so of snow. The wind is the bad part. Deer don't like to move in the wind, and of course you lose the ability to hear them coming.
But I'm going to try!
Hopefully my back holds up!

In May of 2004 I was on a camping vacation that placed me in Virginia's Mountains . I was in the Skyline Drive part of the Shenandoah National Park. I spent 2 nights at a developed camping area called Loft Mountain. My campsite was just 400 yards from the well known Application Trail . Hunting is against the law in National Parks and it seems that the animals know it .

As I was finishing breakfast one morning , I looked up as I heard something moving through the brush toward my camp. I watched as a 1year old deer with only very short horns stepped into my campsite. I froze in place where I was sitting at the pick-nick table . The deer eased over near the table , looked right at me ,
turned and walked 10 feet to a tree and then he layed down . I sat astonished by his behavior , but dared not upset the animal knowing that he could decide to attack me. After 15 minutes I had lost my fear and went to the fire and poured myself a second cup of coffee. The young deer looked at me but he did not move .

That deer stayed in my campsite for nearly a full hour before he slowly arose and walked off . It was the experience of a lifetime .

Pretty neat Smokey!
When I was around 12, we were in northern Wisconsin on vacation. We heard some people talking about an albino deer that would eat out of your hand. We drove to where they said it hung out, and when we stopped the car, sure enough, it came out of the woods and right up to our car and ate bread out of our hands. It knew it was safe. Albino deer are protected here.

I've seen many wild animals , yet there are some that I've only seen in a Zoo . I've never seen a Bear or a Panther in the wild . I have seen Eagles, Hawks, Osprey , Woodpeckers , and even a Blue Heron . Also I've seen Raccoons , Opossums , and Alligator Snapping Turtles . I have never seen a Moose ,
Elk , or a Badger in the wild .

I look forward to reading about the personal experiences of other forum members .

Back in the early 1990s while bow hunting for deer, I had a bear run towards me (I was sitting on the ground) and I shouted at him and he stopped at 27 yards from me. He "woofed" at me then (thankfully) turned and ran.
I also saw 3 badgers while camping in Wisconsin. We were roughing it back in the woods......we left quickly! LOL!

When I was 12 years old , I was camping with my Boy Scout Troupe at a location we often camped
. It was property that the BSA owned and was along one bank of the Intercostal Waterway . On Saturday morning someone discovered a poisonous Copperhead Snake near the camp . A few of us keep a watch on the snake as someone went and got one of the Adults.

The Adult Leader came and killed the snake with a shovel. Being boys we transported the snakes head back to camp via the shovel and placed it on a stump nearby so we could look at it . After lunch , everyone went on a scheduled hike . When we returned a few hours later we discovered that the Snakes head was no longer resting on the stump where we had left it . A careful search soon found that the Snakes head had worked itself 10 feet from the stump under leaves and sticks of the forest floor . We all learned a great lessen that day , NEVER ASSUME THAT YOU KNOW ALL ABOUT NATURE . [blink]
