I think the Packers were looking for potential depth at Center with losing Tretter and having both Linsley and Barclay both in contract years... plus rookie contracts are cheaper, and Barclay struggled when asked to fill in for Lang last year, so they may be trying to get younger/cheaper/better with the back-ups.
Front office personnel and members of the coaching staff view him as a guard/center hybrid similar to the role Don Barclay filled this past season.

Also a different article I read basically said he was injured last year and stayed in and kept fighting, and put off a good bit of bad tape because of it. But some teams will give you credit for fighting though injuries and still playing. While his previous years tape looks better... and sounds like he was all better by his pro-day and was surprising teams how well he moved compared to how bad his tape was as a Senior.
