I can't see the draft as being a "savior" for this teams defense. These kids are right out of college, and unless you can get a guy like TJ Watt, it might take years to develope them into guys that can do the job.
It seems the last several years for Ted is, "draft , develope, and then dump."
We make them good players, and then let them go because he doesn't want to pay them.
If we don't get competent help on defense, we might win some games by out scoring the other team, but if we have to depend on defense to win a playoff game for us, we are dead meat.

I was just thinking about this. Could 2017 be a preparation year. That meaning. We have a pretty healthy chunk of money left and not very many players worthy of spending it on left in FA that would help the defense very much. So instead of throwing money at a long shot chance of making a top defense now, use that money this year to lock up some of next years FA we want to keep. Take maybe Linsley and Dix use 15million of the cash we have left. Give them a good chunk of their guaranteed money in Base salary this year, and less in SB so they leave more room next off season. Draft some early defenders and give them a year to work into the system, and concentrate on defense again next year since we should have the offense pretty much set.

Arguably Lacey and Jones could be thrown in as well.
However Thompson's drafting has been so poor that the Packers haven't developed many players that are coveted by other teams.
Most of Thompson's drafted players that have been dumped were released because they flat out weren't any good.
