Last I checked the punter is still considered a part of the team.

This smells of a cut and resign type of situation. Only with a tryout for a replacement in the middle. Based on those stats, it doesn't seem to make sense. Masthay has better distance average over his career than this kid does in his time playing and he kicked in warm weather. His average isn't likely to get better in the cold weather of Dec in GB.

Masthay has never been the best punter at flipping field position, but what he has been good at is angle kicking and dropping the ball inside the 20.
The world needs ditch diggers too Danny!!!

Cold weather, I'm not too worried about; but it seems his coldest game was about 40 degrees in Carolina. So in cold games will he cost s 20 yards per game?

Here's my biggest problem: How steady are Schum's nerves in a big game or crunch time punting or holding?

Here's a super big problem: how do Ted Thompson and the staff know about his nerves in big games or crunch?

One way to find out his nerves is to have a competition, say, "Schum here's the ball, these next 4 punts v. KC will determine whether you make $500K or have to live in your mama's basement working part time as a greeter in Walmart."

The second part of this is how Ted opperates. He empties the cupboard of people with familiarity (albeit underwhelming performance) for a total unknown who on paper appears worse than your previous 2 options. This is the guy pulling the trigger on this roster the next few days.

PFWT mentioned something I thought of too. Can you re-sign a cut to save a few hundred k in cap?

We are all worried about the holding job because for years we had to deal with princess Ryan Longwell that always blamed the holder for any mistake and was so picky we had to carry Doug Pederson with our team even when he was like 65 years old. On those dark ages we effectively carried a "holder" in our roster.

Crosby and most of the NFL kickers aren't so picky. Granted a bad hold can make him miss a FG but he is not really picky about how the hold should be as long as it is good to kick the ball.

So I'd relax about the holding and really panic about the punting.

Are you scared? This is from last season:

(4:40) 5-J.Schum punts 23 yards to JAC 22, Center-48-A.DePaola, downed by TB-46-J.Lane.

Not scared enough!

I'm a lot more concerned about Dline and their endurance than the fucking punter. But hey, that's just me!

Ted Thompson signed Schum because he can ALSO play DL. Nickname in HS was Schum-bag...guy could really set an anchor inside. Masthay was given first crack but when he was continually obliterated by our recently cut 4th string center it was clear the team had to move on to get more from their punter. How could we in good conscience waste another roster spot on a punter who couldn't play DL?

I just hope Schum doesn't suffer a right leg injury in game or we'll just have to go for it every time on 4th down not to mention his absence weakening the DL rotation. Oh, and if he's our holder, I guess I hope he doesn't suffer any hand injuries either while he's rotating in with the big uglies.

beast (22h) : College Coaches wouldn't want that publicly, as it would hurt recruiting and they might not get the job.
beast (22h) : I thought they were supposed to publicly announce them, at least the NFL ones. Hafley was from college, so I believe different rules.
Mucky Tundra (22h) : Who knows who they're interviewing? I mean, nobody knew about Hafley and then out of nowhere he was hired
