That's a GREAT POINT! ...one of my biggest problems with the NFL is the oversimplification of the game, most specially the positions and defensive labels. Such as a 4-3 DE and 3-4 DE are extremely different as well as a 4-3 OLB and a 3-4 OLB... but the NFL uses simply labels to make it simpler for those fans that don't get as much into it. When they should be using terms such are interior DL, edge rushers, and LB to show that their is a HUGE difference...

As Chip Kelly correctly said (and I hate admitting Chip Kelly said anything correct), the 4-3 and 3-4 labels have become completely pointless at the NFL level, because as teams pass the ball a LOT LOT more, the traditional conservative 3-4 defense is basically completely gone... all NFL 3-4 defenses are now aggressive hybrid 3-4 defenses. And there are teams (such as the Broncos and Seahawks) who are using hybrid 4-3 defenses (which have a lot in common with the aggressive hybrid 3-4 defenses).

I have no idea if he'll break out.... but I said pretty early on that they could of looked at Mike Neal at 3-4 OLB... and as soon as they did move him... I said they moved the wrong guy as Datone looked so much more athletic than Neal and to my surprise Datone looked SOOOOO much more natural running around upright than Perry. (Perry looked great attacking, but reading/reacting or coverage... Datone looks so much better). So I'm excited with hope that Datone could potentially be Peppers, long term replacement.

Datone looked extremely raw in coverage, like he hasn't been doing it long or hasn't trained doing it long (which is probably the case as he's been a DT)... but he seemed mentally comfortable with the idea... as well as looking and moving at the same time. As well as Datone seems athletic enough to stay with the big guys (TEs/big RBs)... he might not be able to mirror or match them in coverage, but when he makes a mistake he's athletic enough to stay in the area with them. But I think Datone has the potential to become as good as Peppers in coverage (well maybe without the super long reach for batted down passes aspect)... not saying Datone will be that level this season, but just he has that potential to grow into that.

I think Perry problem was mental (though he's getting better at it). But in coverage, he felt unsure or out of place and his mind would panic when things didn't go right, leading to loss of reaction time... and when he dropped back into zone watching the QB, he's feet would slow.
