Ted had plenty of the so called "failures" but that's how the draft works.
If look at all the successes and failures Ted is really above average, some teams could have drafted randomly and got better results, some teams even seemed to be drafting to get worst. Even the "very good" reams had a lot of failures in their drafts.

I'd say Ted is in the top 10 of the league when drafting. Probably top 5.

I think when you've had success, it affords you the opportunity to take some high risk/high reward type players in the draft as well. Not that the Packers seem to do that like I feel the Cardinals did this year in round one. I would have been okay with Packers taking Myles Jack at #27, but then again maybe even if he turns out to be a great player, he wouldn't have been great in the Packers defense? Dom Capers just doesn't seem to scheme around his talent, but rather tries to get his talent to adapt to his scheme.

I guess I am ignorant. I didn't like the pick in 07. Many many fans didn't. Time proved we and the 15 GMs who passed on the so called top 10 talent were correct.

If you go back to the old site and look at my posts you will see that even before his weight room injury I was against selecting Harrell at 16.

High risk picks are fine in the 4th round. Slight risk in the 1st round especially in the top of the round. Medium risk in round 2 and 3.

Many people didn't like the Aaron Rodgers pick, how the fuck did that go? Fact of the matter is fans rarely EVER are happy about a pick. Why? Because god for-fucking-bid they are WRONG. But hey, let's come come back years later and boast how we were negative and RIGHT!

I did see a few of his games but not many. I loved the idea of drafting Aaron. I wanted him to sit and watch Brett for 3 years if possible. I knew that not all of the things Brett did were going to be things he would do as well because Brett was unique and unorthodox. But he would be able to learn. I couldn't understand why people were so frustrated that Ted took him. I thought it was a tremendous gift and huge mistake by so many other GMs who were being short sighted. Most of them knew they would not be around in 3 years when Aaron was ready to play so why would they run the risk. Even today you see GMs shove their new qbs out there way too soon because they are fearful of their jobs.

Back to Justin. In a similar manner I didn't watch all of his games but I read about him. There were reports that he took plays off. That he played down to the level of his competition. I didn't see DT was one of the bigger needs. They had Corey Williams and Pick so they were fine. Don't get me wrong, I like getting quality linemen on both sides of the ball. EVERY YEAR is fine with me. But you don't need to draft the fatties in the first round every year.

To my unskilled eye they needed a Safety, OLB and RB more. I wasn't enamored with KGB so I thought they cold use help at DE as well but that was a lesser need.

As far as pumping my chest out at his failed dream. Get real. That is a stupid comment. Why would I ever want any player who wears the Packers Green and Gold to fail? Why would I ever be happy about it or that I thought TeddyT made a mistake with any of his selections even a 7th round pick? That doesn't even make sense. I want every single player to be a HoFer. Obviously it is not possible but I certainly want them all to succeed. All I have ever said is that I didn't think Justin was the best player available at that time nor was he the best player available at a position of greater need.

If I had my druthers I would rather have seen GB take a safety. My hope was for Mike Griffin or Reggie Nelson but then I didn't watch them in college so I wouldn't have known who would have been the best fit in GB. OLB was second on my list. I was only basing that on the reports I read.

Once Justin was selected I shrugged my shoulders and figured Ted knew best. I had hoped that a ferocious rush by the front 4 would mitigate the need for a stud safety. I had hoped he was right in taking the gamble on an often injured player and that the reports I read were not correct.

2005 I remember everyone bemoaning the foolish S Nick Collins pick, who (coincidentally) the Ravens phoned the Packers saying congrats on picking.

2006 I wanted WR Chad Jackson over WR Greg Jennings. I was not right. (stupid ESPN got me!!)

2008 people were pissed off about Jordy Nelson pick, lol. Not nearly as pissed as the Brian Brohm pick! haha

Oh, I was CERTAIN the few clips I seen between Eddie Lacy and Johnathan Franklin proved enough insight that Franklin would be the ball-carrier of the future, not Lacy. I was certain the 2015 Lacy was the Lacy we'd get from day one. I was not right.

Desmond Howard and Charles Woodson are the only players that I really sought out to watch in college. I did like Noel Devine for a bit, but I just don't get much college game tape through these eyes for too many good objective analysis. I have watched Badgers games, but I know not to speak on that because ... well ... I'm a bit of a Badger homer and openly admit as much. 🙂

Yes the average person including media types get things wrong. I remember people being upset with Nick. I don't remember myself. I do remember being worried if it would workout for him after a yr or two.

I trusted Ted on the Jennings and Nelson picks but I wasn't sure. I knew you liked Franklin. I wanted Lacy and was pleased Franklin was thrown in on the deal.

For the most part I can take Teddy's selections. I simply don't like taking a guy who had injuries @ 16. I didn't mind taking Hawk as there didn't seem to be a lot of options and they needed an ILBer.

There is just tooo much going on behind the scenes that we don't know about. I mean, maybe the HYPE'd player showed lack of passion in interviews? Or maybe the position coach doesn't feel he can coach him up? Or gosh any multitude of things that just negate the whole scenario of predicting a player is going to flop. I feel we all forget at times that these are kids ranging from 19-24 or so going from no money to raking in six figures. If we try to gloss over that as if it matters nothing, we are stupid. That's the kicker that we just keep forgetting about ... what will the MONEY do to the KID?

We may get lucky GUESSING from time to time, but it's absolutely no more valuable than a broken clock striking true twice a day.

Edit, just remembered another guy I completely whiffed on. Chris Darkins. I was so damn high on him, I thought he was going to be 1,000 yard back for sure and catching it out of the backfield. LeShaun Johnson too, but I admit that was more because he freaking owned it on Madden with the toss sweep! lol
