Without free agents, Mike McCarthy might have to improve Packers from within

ESPN wrote:

I love the title of the article. Of course they have to improve from within they they do not sign any FAs.

But can you consistently improve from year to year? Probably not.

Some of my favorite lines:

Packers president Mark Murphy said earlier this week that Thompson isn’t going to overspend for players.

I don't see the majority of fans asking them to overspend. There are times when it may be necessary but not always. Trevathan as an example, the Bears did not over spend. I am sure Uncle Teddy probably says they did. But he is just as much a quality player as Perry. Perhaps more so.

“Our division has improved their teams from the outside, there’s no doubt,” McCarthy said.

He forgot to add "But we don't need to." Lots of teams improve from the outside. It actually does work.

“What we do every year, we spend a majority of our time on the draft. The draft is our lifeline and that will never change.”
Nobody has asked you to not make this the focus area.

The biggest laugh came from this classic line:

“We get better by practicing better and doing better and finding better personnel and doing all the things that we do,” Thompson said.

I guess this means none of the FAs that have been signed to date were better than the players currently on the roster. Otherwise someone on his staff would have made some kind of inquiry about them.

Is the draft considered from within?

Where can we expect natural improvement from within?

WR - through Monty, Janis, Abby.
TE- more experience for R.Rodgers.
RB - By Lacy dropping a couple tons.
ILB - with experience for Ryan,Thomas (not counting Matthews at ILB).
Secondary - with another year for Ha-Ha, Rollins and Randal and also Gunter and Goodson.

I wouldn't expect experience improvement on the Oline, or Dline so those are two areas that upgrading from outside are probably the only way to improve them.

The WRs are the most obvious group that will benefit.

Of course the biggest thing holding them back is Mike's fear-based mindset when the season is on the line. That probably won't change.

If he earns it, he will likely be worth it since he plays a position that is in higher demand than an inside linebacker. These contracts clearly illustrate who is perceived to be the "better player." I don't understand why so many folks compare the two.

That's not to say Trevathan wouldn't have been a good signing by the Packers, it's just to say that Perry's contract is largely irrelevant in the matter.

Everyone keeps saying Ted should have went after Trevathan because he was worth the money the bears paid, I say he played behind a D front that made him look good, watch and see how effective he is this year and if he dominates again then I will agree but until then I think having Barrington back is the best solution to ILB, remember folks he was made the starter last season because of being a beast but got injured in the first game so having him back along with Ryan having a second year jump, the middle will be fine

The wide receivers will be improved.

The offenslive line will PLAY better because they SHOULD be actually healthy. You guys even following things like T.J. Lang shoulder surgery  or David Bakhtiari
ankle  injury?

The linebacker position could be better with more Jake Ryan experience and return of Sam Barrington who I think will play more run downs with Matthews moving inside on some passing downs.

The punter needs to be replaced.

The running back position needs, absolutely NEEDS someone who is a threat to be a home run hitter. Fee-fi-fo-fum and a pile of dust is poo.

The tight end position is going to better because Jared Cook WILL sign with the GREEN BAY PACKERS.

... but then of course there is this ...

Amazing how all of you settle so easily. I suppose it is because you grew up in the generations you have. There was a time in this country when people actually bucked the system at every turn and demanded some changes. I guess those days are over.

Improvement from within - LOL - Yeah lets go with that and be a bunch of pussies not calling for veteran free agents to shore up the roster.

What I am saying is for a few shekels more Uncle Teddy could have acquired a better player and filled a position of need. Yeah sure maybe Jake or Palmer or Thomas or Barrington or Bradford will one day grow up and do the job. Maybe it will be next year and maybe it will be in 3 years. No one knows. What we do know is Trevathan is already there. A real man doing a real man's job in the NFL. As I said before The Denver defense was benefit to Trevathan but GB has an above average defense as well. He would have made it better.

Why didn't Perry get someone from any of the teams to offer him 2 or 3 years? Because he's isn't worth the risk.

Although the Bears signed two decent free agent line backers, so I imagine they will make each other better. The point is that signing Perry has no bearing on Trevathan. If the Packers wanted Trevathan, they could have easily made it happen while signing Perry, while making a few other moves. The reality is that they must not have wanted Trevathan, for whatever reason, at least not at his market value even if that is perceived to be affordable.

Do you know for a fact that Perry wasn't offered any longer contracts? Perhaps he decided to bet on himself to have a better year and cash in with much bigger money next offseason? That certainly happens.

We will simply have to disagree that Perry isn't worth the few million dollars that he will likely get paid. It's basically no risk. If he doesn't work out or goes on IR, he will probably only be paid a few million. That's hardly a big risk on a team that needs more linebacker talent. If he provides some pass rush and run defense throughout the season, and most importantly, delivers decent pass rush in the playoffs, he will easily be worth the $3.5-5 million he will be paid. That's the the market for young pass rushers that are potentially on the rise. If Perry can stay slightly more healthy this season than last, he will probably earn more than $5 million per year in 2017. The bottom line is that if signing Perry is a "risk," it is a very minor risk in the big scheme of things. I think keeping Julius Peppers around at his salary is a much bigger risk, and even that isn't a huge risk beyond this season.
