The Packers were trying to trade for this guy?

Jared Cook is just the kind of free agent Green Bay Packers general manager Ted Thompson likes -- the kind that wouldn’t count against his team in the compensatory draft pick sweepstakes.

So it should come as no surprise that Cook, the former St. Louis Rams tight end, was the first -- and so far only -- free agent to visit the Packers since the market opened last Wednesday. According to a source, Cook visited the Packers on Monday.

A source said the Packers inquired about Cook at the trade deadline last season but couldn’t swing a deal.

We can only assume 2 things Something happened to JC sometime between that trading deadline last year and now that made Ted change his mind or the two sides can't agree on the money side of it. Its probably the latter. I suppose it could be that JC just doesn't want to play in Green Bay but I doubt that is the issue. For the most part these guys go where he money is.

The news that he inquired about a trade last year is news to me. Maybe Ted has been trying to address the issue at TE after all. One team can't complete a trade though.

He's probably thinking about it as he's looking for better offers.

He probably discusses in season trade scenarios 5x per week that just never work out. If traded, Rams take hit for prorated bonus and GB would be on the hook for $7M salary prorated for 2015 and a full 7M salary or 2016, if he was on the roster for the first game and the $7M salary again in 2017. No way Ted trades a pic for that salary for an under-performer like Cook.

I'm certain Ted's interest in Cook was centered on getting him to commit to voiding 2017 and taking a MUCH lower salary in 2016 and maybe even in 2015 too. And then if he performs in '16, Ted gets his pick back as a compensatory one in '18.

I like to see both Cook and Marcellus Bennett signed, then Mike could tell them he wants them to "fight it out" for the position.😂

Maybe if he came here and had a QB like Rodgers he wouldn't under perform.
It DOES make a difference who is throwing the ball.
Just ask Greg Jennings!
I'd really like to see Ted get this guy and shore up the TE position.

I'd rather he pick up this guy than reach for one of the top six TEs in this draft as much as I think it's going to take to get any of those (Hunter Henry, Jerrell Adams, Austin Cooper, Thomas Duarte, Tyler Higbee, and Nick Vanett).

IMO, the only one worth drafting before the fourth is Adams and, maybe, Henry (who I think may be one of the most overrated players in this entire draft -- some put him in the first; if Ted spends a first on him, I"ll be pissed on draft day and the rest of you will be trying to get me to chill out again 😁 ). But I expect all of them to be long gone by then.

And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
