This kind of thing is upsetting. If you can't parent your children to brush off words, you probably shouldn't be a parent. Instead of trying to put your kid in bubble wrap and protecting them from every potential paper cut, why not teach them how to ignore it or even maybe use it as fuel to drive them to be better? You don't wanna hear "Airball"? Then put down your goddamn phone, pick up a ball and practice your jumper!!

Here’s the content of the WIAA email sent by the organization’s director of communications Todd Clark to state high school officials late last month concerning “sportsmanship.”

Seasons Greetings,

I hope everyone has a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, as well as the opportunity to take a short breather.

Heading into the new year with the holiday tournaments and conference schedules ramping up, and the winter sports Tournament Series soon to follow, we want to identify a point of emphasis for sportsmanship this season.

As we reviewed the fall tournaments and the sportsmanship evaluations and observations, we want to address concerns with a noticeable increase in the amount of chants by student sections directed at opponents and/or opponents’ supporters that are clearly intended to taunt or disrespect.

Not wanting to restrict creativity or enjoyment, an enthusiastic and boisterous display of support for a school’s team is welcomed and encouraged at interscholastic events when directed in a positive manner. However, any action directed at opposing teams or their spectators with the intent to taunt, disrespect, distract or entice an unsporting behavior in response in not acceptable sportsmanship. Student groups, school administrators and event managers should take immediate steps to correct this unsporting behavior.

Some specific examples of unsporting behavior by student groups including chants directed at opposing participants and/or fans. Among the chants that have been heard at recent high school sporting events are: “You can’t do that,” “Fundamentals,” “Air ball,” “There’s a net there,” “Sieve,” “We can’t hear you,” The “scoreboard” cheer, and “Season’s over” during tournament series play.

Thanks for your assistance!

Nothing would be better to send a message to the WIAA than to have all fans during this years State Boys and Girls Basketball championship games until after the opening jump ball.
The world needs ditch diggers too Danny!!!

"Scoreboard" is too offensive? Fuck me. You don't like the chant? Suck less.

Just another step in the "everyone is special" mantra our country has championed for the last 20-30 years. Everyone feels entitled to everything including the now inalienable right to not have your feelings hurt.

So someone doesn't love you as much as you think you deserve. So what?

Just more of the "dumbing down" of America.
"Participation trophies" and now this. How lame can you get? As long as you arn't cursing, you SHOULD be able to yell.

Next they will have everyone finish in first place, and everyone will be the leading scorer (of course they won't actually keep score anyway).
Every kid will come out of school thinking they DESERVE to play in the NFL, NBA or MLB. Even if they suck at sports.

It was always my understanding that a participation trophy was a small trophy that every player or every team got just for participating. I was never under the impression that the winning team got the same trophy as the losing team. The winners still got their first place trophy and it said first place and was usually larger than any others, second place got theirs, third place etc. If this is the case I have far less of a problem with participation trophies. On the other hand, if like in the commercial each player or team gets the same trophy and all it says is participant then yeah that is big time wrong.
