GREEN BAY, Wis. -- There’s a reason the 40-yard dash is one of the most anticipated and important tests at the NFL scouting combine every year.

You can’t teach speed.

And when a player -- or worse yet, a team -- doesn’t have it, it’s obvious.

In the Green Bay Packers’ case, a lack of speed is perhaps the biggest contributor to their offensive woes.

It’s not a stretch to say the Packers have the slowest team in the league when it comes to the skill positions in the passing game.

A study of all 32 teams' top three receivers and No. 1 tight end at this point in the season confirmed that. Using 40 times of every player from their NFL combine test or, if they didn’t run at the combine, their college pro day, the Packers currently have the slowest foursome of top receiving targets in the NFL (see accompanying chart).

Interesting post.

Browns, Rams, Chiefs, Titans all near the top without having any star NFL receivers.

New England and GB at bottom.

My biggest beef with Richard Rodgers isn't his speed. It is his inability to break tackles. I've never seen him break one tackle. He almost always gets tackled immediately. He does have amazing hands though.

That is what injuries do to a team. If you put back in either Jordy or Ty and Quarless they magically jump up to middle of the pack at 4.54 average.

Jones was never a speedster, he was always tough, he shouldn't be running all the vertical routes they have him doing, he should be running the slants.

The question about James Jones is WHY has his play deteriorated since the first few games he was with the Packers this season? Hamstring? Other injury? Agreed, he never was very fast even when he got the job done.

I was just coming around to liking Richard Rodgers; If Quarless comes back healthy and in shape, I think he will be a slight improvement. I'm more comfortable with either than with a hybrid like Finley.

Lacy should be included in "slowest weapons". I was possibly the first in here to say, I MUCH prefer a Starks-type runner to a plodder like Lacy. Give a speed back a hole, and he gets a helluva lot more yardage. Give no hole at all, as so often happens with our sad sack O Line, and Lacy gets stacked up just like a smaller guy - actually worse because he doesn't bounce outside or reverse his field or whatever like Starks or most other RBs.

Total bullshit if you ask me.

NONE of these guys are slower than Jordy. Jordy's never been a guy to blow past DBs with pure speed. He's beating guys on slants, double moves and the occasional pump fake. Also, teams know they have to watch the back shoulder fade. THAT is what helps Jordy get deep.

I would also note: Both Montgomery and Cobb have gotten deep since this slump started. The ball was not delivered into Cobb's hands and Monty had the ball but couldn't bring it in. I chalk that one up to being a rookie.

The problem with this team is the same problem Mike's teams have had since day ONE. That is, they are not mentally ready to play football. They normally show up for two quarters, and with this talent, that's enough to beat most of the teams out there.

Until they solve this problem, they are pissing away the careers of not only Aaron, but everyone else who busts ass the whole year to prepare themselves.

I wonder what Uffda would have to add to this thread. It's painfully obvious how slow we are at the skill position. Montgomery will help this when he gets back. Probably take Janis another couple years to learn his routes.

As for Jones, whatever. There's a reason he's playing for league minimum.

What was one fatal blow in that pre-season game in Pittsburgh. Just a huge negative domino effect.

I stated before this season, if Cobb or Nelson go down this offense was going to struggle with no proven WR options. Monty, Adams, Janis, Abbs may become good in a year or two and we may end up with a WR corp to rival 2010. A lot of credit is given to the drafting of ARod and deservedly so. But the real hits drafting that sent this team to the SB was the consecutive hits of Jennings, Jones, Nelson. I don't have very good expectations that any of our young WR combined with Cobb will come close to what those three became combined with DD.

Talk all the shit you want, but 40 times aren't the reason that Aaron is missing throws he normally makes in his sleep, and it's not the reason he clenched in fear on the last play of the Carolina game.

It's also not the reason we didn't show up emotionally read for 7 quarters in a row (not counting the San Diego game.)

This wouldn't be a problem if we actually ran shorter routes..

But our O just likes to send 4 deep and pray.
