GREEN BAY — As Ty Montgomery walked gingerly through the Green Bay Packers' locker room Thursday afternoon, heads repeatedly turned.

Given that the rookie third-round pick had sat out the final preseason game with hamstring tightness, the way he was walking was disconcerting.

Until he explained the reason.

"I broke in a new pair of cleats today [at practice]," Montgomery explained with a smile. "My feet hurt."

Well, he'd better make sure those cleats are ready for Sunday's regular-season opener at Chicago, because special teams coordinator Ron Zook indicated Thursday evening that Montgomery will handle both the kickoff and punt return duties.

The kickoff part was a foregone conclusion, as the Packers didn't really work anyone else during the preseason that remains on the roster, at the behest of coach Mike McCarthy, who wanted Montgomery to get as much work as possible.

"Mike hasn't told me for sure, but I'm assuming it's probably going to be 88 (Montgomery)," Zook replied when asked of his kickoff plans.

The mild surprise is that Montgomery is apparently also getting the call on punt returns. Even though Micah Hyde's 15.8-yard punt return average — one which included a pair of touchdown returns — would have led the NFL had he returned enough balls to qualify, Zook sounded like he plans on going with the rookie there, too, after Hyde didn't do any returning during preseason. Montgomery returned three punts for 24 yards, with his longest being a 14-yarder.

"Micah hasn't returned any this year, but I think 88 is coming into his stride. I feel good about what he's done here," Zook said. "Over the last couple weeks really, he's got a pretty good feel for what we're trying to do and I think we've done a little bit better job of doing the things that he can do."

I understand Burnett is injured and Hyde might get a bigger role at S this week, but is it just me or does it seem like the ST coaches want a WR doing the punt returning even if Hyde is averaging better yards per return?

Last year they kept rotating Cobb in there instead of simply going with Hyde who was averaging better.

Any reason they're trying to stay away from Hyde as a return?
Safety could be tired as he's finishing his drive is the only reason I can think of, while the WR might be fresh off a breather from the bench... other wise I don't see why they're trying to keep Hyde out of the punt return role.

Having Montgomery return punts makes me a tad nervous.
He doesn't look all that sure handed catching the punted ball.
Kick returns, I am fine with.

I find this difficult to understand. Hyde was very very good returning punts last season and not only that but Hyde has never been a very important defensive player, he is quite terrible covering.

So we are thin at WR and we decide to "try" Montgomery as our punt returner instead of using the best PR we have in the team.... Genius.

I don't know you guys but this guy Zook I don't like.

Punt and kick returner is a thankless job and the person is put into harms way. I remember when Tramon Williams use to handle the job, I cringed until I saw him throw up the fair catch signal. Still remember that Carolina game when Thomas Davis took out our rookie receiver, ending his career on a kickoff (Terrence Murphy?). Just a horrible position for anybody to do.

MOntgomery's more explosive than Hyde. Zook is a joke, though.

I'm not sure why but something is telling to watch for a big return from Monty this weekend. Maybe not a TD but a nice one to be sure (inside the bears 20) and it will come after a Bears score to take the wind out of their sails.

That's my one bold prediction for the game.

Oh and TDs from Richard Rodgers and James Jones.
