As shown above, in 14 overall picks, Thompson has picked 5 busts and 5 Pro Bowl players. With 36% in both categories, Thompson’s bust rate and Pro Bowl rate are significantly better than the NFL average, which again are 50%/20%.

Now factor in that two of those "busts" had significant injuries which contributed to their inability to live up to their potential, Jerel Worthy and Terence Murphy and your estimation of Ted should go even higher. Another one is Brandon Jackson was was a fine, if unspectacular player for years. Kind of a pass pro specialist.

If you just go by the measure of drafting a quality player in Round 2, regardless of number of picks, then Thompson’s success rate is 8 of 9, or 88%.

Ted Thompson is really decent in rounds 2-5 it seems and tends to find a diamond late here and there.

living here in San Diego, I get a lot of questions regarding how successful the Packers are and two having two back to back HOF qb's. And at the same time, how come so many teams continue to suck? Sure those suckie teams may have a good season or two, but they eventually fall back into the suckie team category. Will be interesting to read the next story regarding the Patriots, seeing they usually kick the Jets ass.

It's a shame Ted Thompson can't be anywhere near as good in Round 1 or with defensive players. He needs to draft defense in Round 2 more often.

I'm sorry but some of these caveats from a reputed site like Total Packers are beyond ridiculous. Jerel Worthy was a flat out bust injuries or not. To try and factor him into the numbers to make them sound more impressive is called reaching. It kills you in a draft and it makes you look foolish in an argument.

Ted Thompson sits on his hands per former GM: "because they’ve had 25 fricking years of great quarterbacks. Of course it works. Try it without a special quarterback."

The more interesting question is 'why'? He can certainly spot value in later rounds - Hyde, Shields + Tramon (albeit neither were drafted), Barrington, Demond Bishop, Boyd, Daniels - so it's not as if Ted has no clue on scouting defensive talent.

Is it simply the low draft position? Rumours are that Packers had JJ Watt and Revis rated as the best defensive prospects of their class, but neither were realistic gets given the Packers' low draft position in round 1.

Maybe it is simply lost talent evaluators (Reggie McKenzie, John Dorsey, etc.)? I don't exactly think this is the reason, because it's not like the Packers hit on all 1st round picks with those evaluators around (Clay being excluded).

I'd be very interested to see where the "core" players of good defences were drafted. I think the Seahawks will show that outside of Bruce Irwin and Earl Thomas, they didn't use top-15 picks to get their "core" players at other positions. BUT, is that the trend or the exception?

If teams with good defences routinely draft their "core" players in later rounds, the case is stronger that Ted may be weak at defensive scouting. If, however, good defensive teams have a lot of top-10/top-15 picks forming the "core" of their defence, I think it kind of makes the heat Uffda Udfa gives Ted unwarranted. Anyone willing to do such an analysis / know where one might find such data conveniently (without having to search and browse multiple sites)?

I don't care what General Manager you have plucking players. Every single one of them is physically gifted and if you do not have the coaching staff to get the most out of them while also putting them positions to succeed, they will FAIL.

Zero2Cool (4-May) : S2?
beast (4-May) : Seems like the S2 has a love/hate relationship with professional scouts.
