I'm not sure there are three General Managers better than Ted Thompson.

4. Ted Thompson, Packers
Last Year’s Ranking: 3

Ted Thompson is the kind of person who never ventures outside the county, let alone the state. Why travel? He’s got everything he needs right here. With free agency four days old, longtime Packers follower Michael Rodney shared the most astounding stat of the spring: Of the 60 Packers under contract on March 14, only one — Julius Peppers — had ever played a game for another team. Even for Thompson, that remarkable feat is an outlier, but still a signpost of his outlook. Stay the course, and develop from within. Of course, the course is fairly straightforward when you have Aaron Rodgers as your franchise player, but Thompson hasn’t looked his gift horse in the mouth. He’s surrounded it with talent, letting the right ones go (Greg Jennings) and bringing the right ones back (Jordy Nelson). Thompson’s home-fried philosophy isn’t a winner in and of itself — it doesn’t matter where your players come from if you don’t get the right ones — but his implementation of it sure is.

I wouldn't exactly agree that he "surrounded Rodgers with talent".

Rodgers certainly makes everyone around him better, but there's some undeniable talent when looking at our WRs, RBs and even our O-line right now.

There aren't a lot of teams that are build in such a way that you can point to just two glaring weaknesses.... With the draft still coming up.

Your man Jerry Jones barely has a defensive line and an atrocious secondary... Beyond Scandrick, who's really stepped up or developed there? The Seahawks barely have any WRs, little quality at CB behind Sherman, questions at the interior O-line.... The Patriots have no guards, no DTs, only depth at WR...

I think we're in pretty good shape. Certainly among the top 5... And you don't get there by just having a good QB.

It's a QB driven league. You have to assemble one hell of a team if you want your back-up QB to carry you to a Super Bowl. If that's the standard here, you're never going to like how the Packers look ever again.

Next to that, the whole Scott Tolzien experiment was a mess and only happened because Wallace went down, as well. The 2000 Ravens couldn't have carried us through that stretch. When Matt Flynn started we went .500. Pretty respectable for your 4th QB...

This team could win without Rodgers if it has adequate QB play it wont win games with terrible QB play but I don't think that's a unique situation at all.

If Ted Thompson had surrounded AR with better talent, and that includes back up QB and specifically defense.
The Packers should have been better than .500 without Aaron Rodgers.
The fact is he did not.
Ted Thompson is over rated.

Ted Thompson is undeniably a top 5 General Manager in the NFL, in my opinion. Most folks around the league recognize that, too.
