PHOENIX — Although there wasn't widespread support for expanding the use of instant replay during the NFL Meetings this week — virtually every proposal was voted down by teams — Mike McCarthy still sees one area where the league should consider making a change: On potentially game-changing plays.

Even though the Green Bay Packers coach completely understands the slippery slope the league would find itself on if it allowed instant replay to be used on penalty plays, he also had one specific play in mind: Quarterback Aaron Rodgers' first-quarter interception in team's NFC Championship Game loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

Rodgers lofted a pass to Davante Adams in the end zone despite tight coverage from Richard Sherman on the Packers' opening possession believing that Seahawks defensive end Michael Bennett was offsides. As Rodgers said on his weekly radio show two days after the loss, "I think it's pretty evident on the film," and it was — Bennett was indeed offsides.

Why? He's completely right. Rodgers thought it was a free play and it should have been. It's a great example of a game changing play that could have been overturned with replay.

Anyhow, McCarthy is correct, as is Rodgers. The play should have been a free play for the Packers. Maybe they should have a 60 second timer that if it is not visually obvious to declare a ruling within 60 seconds, they just move forward? That won't slow the game down as much as a normal 4 minute commercial stuffing segment and gives more opportunities to have the correct call.

Unless the quarterback actually sees the flag thrown in the air, should he be throwing a lob pass against an elite corner?

We left so many so many points on the field that game, it is really difficult not to think that game was thrown.

At some point when a QB sees an obvious penalty has been committed he has to trust the refs will make the call. I would guess a good number of those free plays are ones where Rodgers never saw a flag but saw the player commit the penalty. Based on the number of times we hit a big play on those vs the number of times the ref missed the call (this is the only one I can remember) I would say it's completely worth it.

99% of the time Rodgers gets it right as far as the "free play" thing. As was said, he doesn't have time to see if the refs (who SHOULD catch it) actually do catch it.

There are many times where a penalty SHOULD have been called and wasn't. Remember the 51-45 playoff loss against Arizona? Where the guy that caused Rodgers to fumble actually had ahold of Rodgers' face mask the whole time? I STILL wonder how the heck the refs missed that. It's not like the guy made contact with it and let go. He pulled AR down the whole time, yanking on his face mask.

Of course there were times in the past where a missed penalty favored the Packers too.

What I'm saying is, it comes across as a bitch move to complain about the officiating, when you cost yourself the game (with the SB) on the line by shitting yourself far, far worse than any and/or all of the officials combined in that game.
