I just heard that Todd McShay's mock draft has the Packers getting Melvin Gordon at #30.

I would jump for joy if that came true!

I think Melvin Gordon in the 4th rd would be a good pick for the Packers. Otherwise, unless he can play CB or NT or ILB, please do not do this, Ted.

I would be happier taking Gordon in the 1st than any of the LB or CBs I've seen so far. Can anyone tell me who these ILB/CB are that they would be so upset to pass on in the 1st round? I have not seen anyone too impressive that supposed to be a 1st rounder.

It's actually a pretty good draft for inside linebackers. At least I think it is. Three (Denzel Perryman, Benardrick McKinney, & Paul Dawson) could go in the first round.

Perryman and McKinney looked highly questionable in college coverage... I think they're going to get beat often in the pros unless they find some great coach who can teach it to them how to be decent in NFL coverages...

I know. Mock drafts are as reliable as a politician. But you asked. Any one of the 6 I mentioned offer more to the Packers than Gordon as they are at positions of need. I realize my opinion is based on the 'experts' as I don't have time to research hours of film. But I know the Packers are decent at RB and questionable at other areas. So I want players that can contribute to our Super Bowl victory in 2016.

Fact/ opinion: Gordon would be a probable back up on the Packers. He offers nothing to Special Teams other than KO return possibly.

Normally, a team has 5-6 CB on the 53 roster. As of right now, we have 3, I believe, and 1 has 0 experience. And only 1 ILB, I believe. Letting Hawk and Jones go is only part of solving the ILB position. They actually have to be replaced with someone. Wasting high picks on probable backups is not what Ted Thompson is going to do.

No sense taking a 2nd/3rd round quality player just because he plays a certain position, like I said I'd rather have a great looking playmaker in Gordon than some guy whose an ILB or a CB that isn't a great player. We gave over 300 snaps to RBs besides Lacy last year, that's more than enough for a good rookie to have an impact. I'm not saying if there is a great looking ILB or CB there don't take him but this idea of you HAVE TO TAKE a ILB, CB, or NT at 1 seems a tad naive me. It's not madden football the right guy has to be there or you end up with Ahmad Carroll because you NEEDED a CB so badly.

Would you trade our #1 pick for Tom Brady? Great trade, right? Possibly the Greatest QB ever for just a 1st rd pick. So what if he is going to sit on the bench behind the current Best QB in the game. AR might get injured. Then we would be able to play Tom Fricking Brady! Of course, we would lose every game all season by 77-? because the other team would score 11 TD's every game because we don't have enough CB's, DL, or ILB to field a defense. I agree that you can't draft a ILB or CB just because it is your turn. But neither do you have to draft someone you don't need.

Free Agency and the draft is a chance to build your team. This isn't Madden or Fantasy Football where you can have great players backing up great players. Having 2 great RB's does not overcome no quality ILB's. If you don't like the ILB or CB available at 30, then trade out of it. Don't waste it on a RB that may not be any better than the ILB's you don't like.

Then there is the current state of RB's in the NFL. They are not valuable. In the last 6 years, there have only been 10 RB's picked in the 1st round. At the time, all of them were 'great looking playmakers' like Gordon. Remember Chris Wells and Donald Brown? How about Jahvid Best and Doug Martin? 2012 #3 pick Trent Richardson? Mark Ingram, CJ Spiller, Ryan Matthews, Knowshon Moreno and David Wilson round out the RB's picked in the 1st rd. Please don't tell me that Gordon is better than any of these 10 when they were drafted. The odds of finding a 1st rd stud RB are minimal.

In the last 6 years, there have been 5 centers selected. How about Alex Mack, Eric Wood, Maurkice Pouncey, Mike Pouncey, and Travis Frederick? I would say the odds of a C working out are much better. And how sexy is drafting a C? All 5 of them are active starters. 5 of the 10 RB are out of the league already.

I would be a little upset if we draft a running back or wide receiver with our 1st round pick. As much as I like Gordon he'll never get the nod over Lacy so he's basically just a change of pace 3rd down back for us. Starks has done fine as the backup and if we're going to try upgrading hopefully its not until the 4th round or later.

Teams don't play just 11 players on offense or defense. If we had a very good RB behind Lacy whoever it was he'd get plenty of playing time and opportunities to help the team win. A great player is not just going to sit on the bench because he's "the back up" that's absurd. I never said you have to draft Gordon but I think he's a good enough player that he'd help us win on Sunday if we did get him. No idea where you are trying to go with the "we don't have enough CB's, DL, or ILB to field a defense" that's not even a slightly realistic scenario and has absolutely no relevance to who we spent a 1st round pick on this year. Trading out is not always an option and I don't really care about history, those are other picks made by other teams with a 100% different talent pool. RBs drafted in 2011 have 0 relevance to this years draft class. 1st round Cs have worked out in the past? That's nice but that doesn't mean there are good ones this year, completely irrelevant. All that shows is those teams were particularly good/bad at evaluating those specific players/positions in those specific draft classes. It means nothing to how or who Ted Thompson should draft in 2014.

I'm not even just focusing specifically on Gordon here, I really don't care who the pick is as long as it's a good player that can help us win. I just don't get all the crying about how the pick MUST be one of 3 positions. That's such a narrow and unrealistic way to look at it IMO and it cuts out WAY too many talented players. If there's a WR they think can be as good as ODB Jr from last year or a RB like Jamal Charles or a pass rusher like Von Miller then heck yeah give me that guy over some run of the mill ILB or CB.

I am sure there are a lot of GMs kicking themselves for not drafting Rodgers, Moss, Dez, etc because they didn't have the need at the time. With short careers and injuries it just makes sense to pick BPA. The guy plays awesome next thing you know you are potentially trading them for 1st round picks or not in a world of hurt when FA rolls around and you can't afford to keep Lacy.
