In a playoff classic, the Green Bay Packers scored 13 unanswered points to beat the Dallas Cowboys 26-21 in front of a sold-out crowd at Lambeau Field.

The two iconic franchises will remember this game for two very different reasons.

For Dallas, it’s the controversial overturn of an apparent Dez Bryant reception late in the fourth quarter. Facing a fourth-and-2 from Green Bay’s 32-yard line, the Cowboys bypassed a long field goal attempt and went for it.

Quarterback Tony Romo, recognizing one-on-one coverage on the outside against Bryant, killed the play called in the huddle and took a shot down the sidelines to his all-pro receiver.

Bryant went up and plucked the ball out of the air, appearing to make one of the finest plays in NFL playoff history. The officials ruled completion, giving the Cowboys the ball at Green Bay’s one-yard line.

Green Bay coach Mike McCarthy, watching on Lambeau Field’s jumbotron, saw that the ball came loose upon making impact with the ground. He challenged the play, arguing that Bryant did not complete the process of the catch going to the ground. Bryant did manage to pull the ball in while laying on the turf, but the fact that the ground jarred the ball loose was enough to result in the officials overturning the call on the field.

Common sense says Bryant caught the ball, but the NFL playbook is not a book of sense.

By rule, if a player does not complete the process of the catch going to the ground, the officials are obligated to rule incomplete. In other words, according to the rules instituted by the NFL, this wasn’t a catch. Fox’s rules expert Mike Pereira, who astutely compared the play to the infamous Calvin Johnson catch that wasn’t in week one of 2010, emphasized this point during the telecast and post game.

All that said, it’s a bad rule and I suspect the competition committee will receive more pressure this off-season than ever before to do away with the rule.

The other storyline, one that will go down in Green Bay lore, was the courageous performance by quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

Limited because of a tear in his left calf, Rodgers played perhaps the best postseason game of his career, completing 24-of-35 passes for 316 yards and three touchdowns. He extended his home streak of no interceptions to 17 games.

Rodgers, doing most of his work from the pocket, played better as the game progressed. He completed his final 10 pass attempts, including going a perfect 9-for-9 in the fourth quarter.

He saved his best for third down.

Facing a third-and-15 late in the third quarter, he hit Davante Adams for a 46-yard touchdown. Adams, who made a great move on Dallas safety J.J. Wilcox in the open field, finished the game with seven receptions for 117 yards.

Green Bay finished the game 9-for-14 (64 percent) on third downs. It was their ninth conversion that sealed victory.

Up against a third-and-11 with two minutes remaining, Rodgers connected with receiver Randall Cobb for a gain of 12 yards. Cobb, who finished the game with eight receptions for 116 yards, had to go down to the ground to secure the catch because a Dallas defender managed to knick the ball just as Rodgers released it.

The catch clinched victory for the Packers, who now travel to Seattle where their season began last September.

Next Sunday, the Packers hope Seattle isn’t where it ends.

I don't think we've made enough about T.J. Lang and his physical play that drew a penalty. That there is the kind of toughness and physical play I want to see out of our team. Was it after the whistle? Probably, but in his eyes (based off his words) someone was trying to split his guy in half so he did something about it.

Also, this energized the crowd too.

Ever since the Bert Emmanual play 20 years ago, you're allowed to catch the ball if it touches the ground, BUT YOU HAVE TO CONTROL IT. DeZ bounced the ball off the turf, and at that point, it was NOT a catch.

If it touches the ground, and you don't have control over it, it's incomplete.

Take that first Calvin Johnson play. In that scenario, Calvin caught the ball, and then put it on the ground, thinking the play was over. He actually DID catch the ball, imo. Not so with Dez, and I said it in the chat right when it happened.

It's no different than trapping the ball on the ground.

Nice analysis Porky!

I do agree with the others that the catch was called correctly (incomplete) - makes sense and like others have pointed out you cant use the ground to help you.
My heart sank when he 'made' that catch - didnt know how they did that on a 4th and (was it 2?)

btw where was peppers during most of the 4th quarter? didnt see him play much - man he had a good game - no idea how he didnt get to the pro bowl.

It was ruled incomplete not because the ball touched the ground, but because the ball moved after touching the ground. If Dez wouldn't have lost control after touching the ground, it would have been ruled a catch.

dfosterf (2-Jan) : Hats off to the Beast
dfosterf (2-Jan) : I'm at 71.76% in pick 'em. 2nd place. Beast is at a flat 75% 9 games ahead. That 75% has got to be unprecedented this late in the season

Mucky Tundra (30-Dec) : After the way they played for most of the game yesterday, I don't see how you can sit anyone for the whole game
Zero2Cool (30-Dec) : I'd say play everyone. Going into playoffs at 7th seed on two game lose streak - yucky
Zero2Cool (30-Dec) : Do the Packers have any best players?
beast (30-Dec) : Play or Rest*
beast (30-Dec) : Should the Packers play or free their best players vs the Bears?
Zero2Cool (30-Dec) : Packers should be 3 - 2 in the Division. Bonkers being swept by both Lions and Vikings. yikes
go.pack.go. (30-Dec) : All crazy stuff…and good point beast
beast (30-Dec) : Packers should be 0-5 in the division, can't say I saw that coming, even 1-4
Zero2Cool (30-Dec) : Sam Darnold 35 TD's ... another one
Zero2Cool (30-Dec) : Baker Mayfield, 39 TD's ... can't say I saw that one
Zero2Cool (30-Dec) : No matter who is playing as 7th, I think we want them to win. Get rid of 2nd seed haha
go.pack.go. (30-Dec) : That would be dhazer who was rooting for Minnesota
beast (30-Dec) : Well, Commanders are currently the 6th seed and Packers the 7th
beast (30-Dec) : Who was it in Chat, that wanted the Vikings to win (because Lions fans upset them) because Packers could not lose the 6th seed?
beast (30-Dec) : If Falcons win, Packers stay as the 6th seed and Falcons lead the NFCS, if they lose, Commanders 6th and Bucs take NFCS lead
beast (30-Dec) : Win or Loss, the NFCS is going down to week 18
Mucky Tundra (30-Dec) : if the Falcons win, how does that affect the overall NFC playoff picture? Does it mean that the NFC South comes down to week 18?
beast (30-Dec) : If Commanders win, the Packers drop to the 7th seed
beast (29-Dec) : Taylor still at it!
beast (29-Dec) : Colts get the ball and fumble turn over
packerfanoutwest (29-Dec) : Jets pull Aaron Rodgers for Tyrod Taylor
Mucky Tundra (29-Dec) : Colts-Giants now a tight one
