GREEN BAY, Wis. -- You might have heard this before: The phasing out of A.J. Hawk from the Green Bay Packers defense has begun.

It happened in 2010, when the inside linebacker did not play a single snap on defense in the season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles. Days later, his agent went so far as to say Hawk would be open to a trade if the Packers weren't going to play him.

A week later, Hawk was back in the lineup, had perhaps his best season and was the starter in Super Bowl XLV.

Rob Demovsky  wrote:

He may have dodged the benching and being cut from the team past seasons but this should be his final year as a starter and probably with the team. Even if there is 1 more year on his contract.

I do believe if you go back and check you will see that I am the one who said at the beginning of the year that if AJ Hawk played 1000+ plays this year, like last , that it was not going to be a good year for The Defense.

Cut your crap son, I have never said AJ Hawk was great. That was you and your boys making shit up.

AJ Hawk has been the best option at whatever position The Packers wanted him to play for the last 8+ years.

2 years ago when Hawk took the pay cut(even though Ted guaranteed all his base salary through this year, thus in the end it really wasn't a cut), it was easy to see that this is probably Hawks last year.

I'll say it again, if this is AJ's last year, when he is gone, whether it be Barrington or a future draft pick taking his place, I will only hope that player can grow into what Hawk has been for The Packers.

I sure won't be bashing that player if he happens to have a bad game like most of you will.

So in response to your statement of how I will handle Hawk leaving,...As usual you are just FULL OF IT!!!!

First here are the numbers on Hawk next year.
Salary 2.45mil, Roster Bonus 800K
Cap number: 5.1 million
Dead money if cut: 1.6 million
Cap savings: 3.5 million

Some questions that need to be answered. Is Clay going to stay at ILB after this season assuming he remains there the remainder of the season. Is what we saw with Barrington going to continue or will he digress. Do we trust the Health of Clay.

If Clay is going to return to OLB, we still don't have a better option than AJ for the opposite ILB spot with Barrington. Jones and Lattimore have so far shown they are not up to the task.

Regardless of what happens, I say keep AJ, nobody has been more durable, and no matter what, he is a solid player to have. He doesn't make highlight plays, but he doesn't mess up either. If we want to bring in competition fine, cut Jones, he will save 3.75 million against the cap next year, and Lattimore will be a UFA and hasn't shown enough for him to be retained.

The world needs ditch diggers too Danny!!!

I will admit that I will be extremely shocked (and disappointed) if we don't draft a MLB in 2015. Clay has done well and Barrington looks to have the goods to be a starter, but Jones is a waste of cash and Hawk will only be slower next year. It is great that Hawk has been consistent and a good leader for the team, but we need him to take a backseat with backseater money if he wants to stay. I don't know what to make of Lattimore. I just don't see us retaining him unless we become desperate due to injury.
