Kuhn still might have something to prove

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- There's little reason to think veteran fullback John Kuhn won't be on the Green Bay Packers' roster when this season opens in September, but the contract he signed last week does not make that a given.

Kuhn will turn 32 on Sept. 9 and is part of a crowded backfield. Although he's the only experienced fullback on the roster and is one of the most experienced players on the entire team, the Packers did not lock themselves into anything with the one-year contract the two sides hammered out last week.

Three things: Undoubtedly, there will be competition, even if it is just UDFAs. If somebody clearly outplays Kuhn, he could be gone little or no cap damage. Secondly, with all those quality RBs, McCarthy could put together some kind of scheme or cross-training where they keep no true fullback at all. That would seem doubtful, since Starks, Harris, and Franklin don't even resemble fullbacks, but who knows. Third, we've seen TEs fill that role a lot in the past. If there's a close call roster-wise, I wouldn't mind at all seeing him cut.

Kuhn is likely to stick around simply because of his blocking ability. No other running back has shown the ability to consistently protect Aaron Rodgers like John Kuhn has. The coaching staff trusts him. Until someone proves they can pass protect better than Kuhn, he'll stick around, imo. At least for another season or two. He also offers special teams contributions, but I think the protection is his best asset.
