GREEN BAY — Aaron Rodgers was more likely quoting the tagline of Game of Thrones  (one of his favorite television shows) than quoting his t-shirt available at Target  (designed by his brother Luke's company Pro Player Merch) on Wednesday when he was talking about the impending arctic conditions that his Green Bay Packers and the visiting San Francisco 49ers will likely be playing in Sunday afternoon at Lambeau Field.

"Winter is coming," the Packers quarterback said Wednesday. "It's here. It's here in Green Bay."

Is it ever. According to WBAY-TV meteorologists , the forecast for Sunday calls for a high temperature of 8 degrees and a low of minus-17. Yes, that's 17 below zero — and that's without factoring in any wind chill.

"It's definitely going to have an effect on the game," Rodgers said. "You know, not everybody in this locker room is from the great state of Wisconsin. We do practice in it, live in it, I think we're going to be better adapting to it initially. But once the game starts, it's about who can execute in the cold weather. It does some different things to the football. It's about taking care of the football in the playoffs and making some big plays."

The Packers did not practice at all on Wednesday, opting for a walkthrough inside their new CRIC training facility inside Lambeau Field. But they will practice Thursday and Friday outside and will do so in pads Thursday, coach Mike McCarthy said.

"We'll have a full practice tomorrow. We'll be in pads," McCarthy said. "We'll do what we can do outside based on our setup down there."

Asked how much practicing in the cold helps the Packers, Rodgers replied: "The cold is a part of winter in Green Bay. You get kind of used to it. You deal with it. You learn how to throw the ball effectively (in it) and you figure out what are the most important things to keep warm and that's your head and your hands. As long as you have a good hand warmer and some sort of heat around your head, you should be OK.

"It definitely does change the texture of the football, so you have to factor that in when you're tossing the ball to a back or when you're throwing it. You have to make some small adjustments."

And the Packers' hope is that they're able to make better adjustments because they're more familiar with it than the 49ers, who were enjoying 62 degree temperatures in northern California Wednesday.

"We live in it. We're around it," Packers linebacker A.J. Hawk said. "I don't think you ever get used to it. You don't get used to it being negative-5 or whatever it is. I think especially guys that are handling the ball, of course, it's huge for them to be out there catching the ball, throwing it. Snapper, punter, kicker, everything.

"For us, it helps, but I think everybody is going to be cold. It's not going to be any different for either team, regardless of where they're coming from. They're going to be cold and so are we. It's whoever handles it best."

The 49ers may come from a more temperate climate, but they are built for cold weather. They play rugged defense, are productive in the run game (No. 3 in the NFL) with running back Frank Gore and their top receiver, Anquan Boldin, played in Baltimore before coming to the 49ers in a trade and is unfazed by the cold.

"Your job is to catch the ball," said Boldin, who had 13 catches for 208 yards in the season-opener against the Packers at Candlestick Park. "I don't care if it's raining or snowing, cold, dry, hot. Whatever it is. I think if you prepare the right way, you don't have to go out and think about it. Just go play football."

Colder the better for us IMO ... especially vs kapernick

According to those tweets at the right side of this page, it's gonna be even colder than this article above. That would be rivaling the old "Ice Bowl" against the Cowboys before Super Bowl I or was it II.

Just the same, let's not get too over-confident. We've got a lot of warm weather guys on the Packers, and for sure the Niners have native northerners too - Kaepernick grew up in Milwaukee.

What this will do is shorten kicks, slow down running, lessen ability to cut - advantage receivers/disadvantage D-backs. It will tend to equalize defenses - a good thing for us - because everything is in slow motion, and it will give weaker O-Lines better ability to pass block against athletic pass rushers.

Net Advantage: Packers, but not because our guys are more used to the cold, rather because the Niner strengths are hurt and the Packers weaknesses are less of a factor.

I just looked over the 49ers schedule this year. They really didn't play in cold weather much at all. GB however has play a lot of cold weather games. The 9ers are extremely physical and it may not make a difference, but I hope it does give us a bit of an advantage.

Be nice for the D to get some turnovers.

beast (8m) : If we win tonight the game is still relative in terms of 5th, 6th or 7th seed... win and it's 5th or 6th, lose and it's 6th or 7th
beast (9m) : Mucky, I thought the ad revenue went to the broadcasting companies or the NFL, at least not directly
Zero2Cool (19m) : I think the revenue share is moot, isn't it? That's the CBA an Salary Cap handling that.
bboystyle (31m) : i mean game becomes irrelevant if we win tonight. Just a game where we are trying to play spoilers to Vikings chance at the #1 seed
Mucky Tundra (40m) : beast, I would guess ad revenue from more eyes watching tv
Zero2Cool (1h) : I would think it would hurt the home team because people would have to cancel last minute maybe? i dunno
beast (1h) : I agree that it's BS for fans planning on going to the game. But how does it bring in more money? I'm guessing indirectly?
packerfanoutwest (1h) : bs on flexing the game....they do it for the $$league$$, not the hometown fans
Zero2Cool (2h) : I see what you did there Mucky
Zero2Cool (2h) : dammit. 3:25pm
Zero2Cool (2h) : Packers Vikings flexed to 3:35pm
Mucky Tundra (2h) : Upon receiving the news about Luke Musgrave, I immediately fell to the ground
Mucky Tundra (2h) : Yeah baby!
Zero2Cool (2h) : LUKE MUSGRAVE PLAYING TONIGHT~!~~~~WOWHOAAOHAOAA yah
Zero2Cool (3h) : I wanna kill new QB's ... blitz the crap out of them.
beast (3h) : Barry seemed to get too conservative against new QBs, Hafley doesn't have that issue
Zero2Cool (4h) : However, we seem to struggle vs new QB's
Zero2Cool (4h) : Should be moot point, cuz Packers should win tonight.
packerfanoutwest (4h) : ok I stand corrected
Zero2Cool (4h) : Ok, yes, you are right. I see that now how they get 7th
Zero2Cool (4h) : 5th - Packers win out, Vikings lose out. Maybe?
beast (4h) : Saying no to the 6th lock.
beast (4h) : No, with the Commanders beating the Eagles, Packers could have a good chance of 6th or 7th unless the win out
Zero2Cool (5h) : I think if Packers win, they are locked 6th with chance for 5th.
beast (5h) : But it doesn't matter, as the Packers win surely win one of their remaining games
beast (5h) : This is not complex, just someone doesn't want to believe reality
beast (5h) : We already have told you... if Packers lose all their games (they won't, but if they did), and Buccaneers and Falcons win all theirs
Zero2Cool (5h) : I posted it in that Packers and 1 seed thread
Zero2Cool (5h) : I literally just said it.
packerfanoutwest (5h) : show us a scenario where Pack don't get in? bet you can't
Zero2Cool (5h) : Falcons, Buccaneers would need to win final two games.
Zero2Cool (5h) : Yes, if they win one of three, they are lock. If they lose out, they can be eliminated.
packerfanoutwest (5h) : as I just said,,gtheyh are in no matter what
Zero2Cool (5h) : Packers should get in. I just hope it's not 7th seed. Feels dirty.
packerfanoutwest (5h) : If packers lose out, no matter what, they are in
packerfanoutwest (5h) : both teams can not male the playoffs....falcon hold the tie breaker
packerfanoutwest (5h) : if bucs win out they win their division
beast (5h) : Fine, Buccaneers and Falcons can get ahead of us
packerfanoutwest (5h) : falcons are already ahead of us
beast (5h) : Packers will get in
beast (5h) : If Packers lose the rest of their games and Falcons win the rest of theirs, they could pass us... but not gonna happen
packerfanoutwest (5h) : they still are in the playoffs
packerfanoutwest (5h) : If Packers lose the remaining games,,,,at 10-7
Zero2Cool (7h) : We can say it. We don't play.
Mucky Tundra (8h) : But to say they are in is looking past the Saints
Mucky Tundra (8h) : That said, their odds are very favorable with a >99% chance of making the playoffs entering this week's games
Mucky Tundra (8h) : Packers are not in and have not clinched a playoff spot.
buckeyepackfan (9h) : Packers are in, they need to keep winning to improve their seed#.
Mucky Tundra (18h) : Getting help would have been nice, but helping ourselves should always be the plan
beast (18h) : Too bad Seahawks couldn't beat Vikings
