Packers have settled for 10 field goal attempts in the last two games and making 9 of them over the last two games.

That's settling for 27 points instead of going for 70.

Offense has to get better on opponents territory.

For me that is the most frustrating stat of the season. It actually goes back to week 3 with the 3 FGs against the Bengals. 2 of those drives started when we were already in FG territory following turnovers. If only half of these drives ended in TDs rather than FG's people would be comparing the Packers offense with Denver. Obvioulsy, other than the Bengals game (maybe) the outcome would not have change and we might still be 3-2 but we wouldn't be saying things like "maybe the defense will have to carry us for a few games"

If I wasn't so lazy I'd go back and see where all of these drives stalled to see if there is a pattern (that's a hint for one of you that may have more ambition than I do)

OK, I'm lazy but I am also bored (being unemployed gives one a lot of time) This will be long and confusing so be warned.

I looked into all the Packers offensive drives that ended up in opponents territory. in respective weeks there were 5, 8, 10, 7, 7 for a total of 37. The good news is that of those 37, 28 of them ended up in scores or kneel downs (2) to end the game.

2 of them were long TD passes over 50 yards so the final play of the drive didn't start in enemy territory so I didn't count them in my following summary.

That leaves 35 drives in which the last play started on the opponents side of the field. The results of those plays are:

TDs 11- 9 came in weeks 1 & 2 and none in weeks 5 & 6

FGs 13 2 in weeks 1 &2 9 in weeks 5 & 6

Missed FG 1

Punt- 3

Turnover 3 - 2 fumble 1 int

Kneel down 2

time ran out- 2

The TDs are obvious considered successes and so are the kneel downs so that leaves 22 drives that could be considered failures (if you look at TDs as successes). One FG was a no brainer gimmie at the end of the half so we won't count that one (21) and 1 punt was late in the game after a kneel down so I won't count that either that leaves 20 failed drives. Of those 20 here is what lead to the end of the drive

Turnovers (3) Obviously a drive killer. There were 3 of them

Missed FG (1) 2 penalties put the packers in long yardage situations.

Punt (2)
1st was from the Bengals 46 so it barely counts but the 3/11 was incomplete.
2nd followed a penalty and a sack drive started at opp 37

Time ran out- (2)
1st- incompletion
2nd 2 inc.

FGs 12-
1st- 2 sacks made it 3/24 pass was short
2nd started in at opp 26, 2 incompletions
3rd started at opp 21 made it to the 1 1 inc 2 short runs
4th sack and halftime
5th sack and inc.
6th 2 inc
7th inc
8th came up short
9th inc. (TD reversed)
10th 2 inc.
11th 2 inc
12th inc.

So what does all this tell us? Besides that I have way too much time on my hands, The packers offense has stalled. Now aren't you glad I was here to tell you that.

Seriously though in 5 of the failures sacks or penalties or a combination of both played a role. In 12 of them incompletions played a role. In 3 of them they just came up short.

Personally I don't see it as the emphasis on the running game causing the offense to bog down as someone suggested as a possibility in another thread. Although I did not look at zero or negative yardage running plays in each of the drives I know there were some. These plays affect a drive as much as incompletions or sacks.

Most of me simply wants to chalk it up to bad luck. Its not like penalties or turnovers or sacks are rampant and obvious causes and lets face it, those things are going to happen. If they affect half the plays then yes it is a problem but the occasional one here and there, aside from coming at bad times, must be accepted.

I have no idea why our offense has suddenly started to sputter and stall at the end of drives. Maybe it has a lot to do with the opposing defenses stiffening in a short field. The thing is, if these numbers were spread out over the 5 games we would probably barely take notice. since the failure have all seemed to come in the last 2 or 3 games though it leaves everyone wondering. In the first 2 games 9 of 13 drives ending in opponents territory were TDs and 1 FG. In the last 2 2 were TDs and 9 were FGs. I'm just glad I am not the one who has to figure it out.

Now back to your regularly scheduled program.

to augment what sschind has done, Wayne Larrivee said GB is last in the NFL inside the red zone with a 35% TD rate. That was before they failed to score another TD a few times during the game.
